Revells newer release of the 59 Caddillac Eldorado body issue

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I don't know if anyone has bought this kit but I bought one and when I opened it up and was checking the parts out to make sure that all of them were there but when I opened the bag that the body was in I seen that the roof was pushed down very bad on the from ther center of the roof to the right side of the roof right at the back window.I had to send the ucp from the box cover so I could get a replacement body but as of today still no body this has been well over a month or so. So I called and talked to some about this and was told it would be replaced in two weeks so I e mailed Revell about this and was told that they have checked some of the same kit to see if it was a issue and sure enough all the kits they checked had the same thing with the body.So I asked them if anyone else had this same issues with this kit and was told yes quite a few of them did. My kit the body was bulging on the top but I didn't see this till I got home with it and opened they persone I talked to at revell said all the ones he opened up were bulged up when he was opening them up.So know they are going to figure a new way to pack the body in the box so this don't happen anymore. Has anyone elese had this kit and was the body like mine??

Even with the large boxes, the body can still be warped!

I got the first go round of this kit years ago (blue car box art) and the roof was bent right at the C pillar. I think sometimes they don't let the body cool down long enough, and the contents of the other items in the box puts too much pressure on a still too warm body.

Throw in the shape of the body itself with those ultra thin roof pillars and sure enough, the roof can be bent easily. Chuck's idea is a good one, but not everyone is skilled in doing this, or the damage is too much that it wouldn't help anyway. I was so miffed at what I knew was the problem, that I contacted Revell and had them send me a new body which they did with no trouble.

I don't now how often this gets addressed at their quality control meetings but really this should be a very rare occurrence. In their quest for getting the most production out of people, the model companies are in such a hurry to get kits out that this stuff happens. It's just a matter of slowing down the line speed a bit, and not have disgruntled customers/builders.

Seems as though logic should dictate that such a kit with a big body as the '59 Caddy, should be in the original sized box as before. I can best believe that some bean counter poo-pooed the idea that a larger box should be used, and they went with the smaller box to save some pennies. Nevermind the fact that they'll be spending more money anyway on replacement bodies, not to mention shipping. :o

One other thing to mention that would be an easy fix for the bent roof problem---------why doesn't Revell "brace" the body somewhat a lot like what RC2 did when they reissued the '69 Corvair?? I got several of those kits and they are VERY well braced on the inside of the body, with no roof warping whatsoever, and if you're familiar with that era Corvair------they have very thin C pillars.

Sure would be a lot cheaper to do that, than to be replacing bodies with the attendant shipping costs like I mentioned above.

I asked them the same thing about the box it for sure is way to small for the body Ihave the first two issues with the big box and the bodies are perfect in them so I hope that they get this figured out it is a real nice kit to bulid I have done two and both are nice when finished.

They could add braces (an exta B-pillar if you will) to the side cavity to give the roof more strength and revise the instruction sheet, to remove them prior to painting.

Sure it comes at a cost, but in time cheaper then inserting a custom made cardboard support to prevent the roof from caving in.

HAH, it's funny you mention that, Bill - just remembered the very kit that got me honing the just-off-boiling-water technique was in fact Monogram's first-issue, metallic blue '59 Impala in that same big box. Body was twisted up like a braid, but I managed to flatten it out.
