patrickllaforge Posted September 3, 2007 Share Posted September 3, 2007 (edited) I'm in the early stages of planning a few builds, one is of a 1978 Mack U685 Single axle dump, and the other is a DM686S 10 wheeler built of Mack Canada, I belive it's an 88' My question is, can I get away with using the cabs from the AMT Mack DM 600 kits? Or will I have to modify the hoods? I think the cabs them selves are the same size, just not sure about the hood... I didnt take as many measurements as I should have I guess! ANy thoughts on the "canadian spread" would be appreciated too! Not sure how to post photos, but once I do, I will! Thanks, Pat You can see the trucks here... mackinac359 Posted September 3, 2007 Share Posted September 3, 2007 The DM600 and U600 share the same cab and hood. The difference is the suspension and frame rails (DM having heavier spec'd items). sourkraut Posted September 19, 2007 Share Posted September 19, 2007 (edited) The last two posts were correct, except for the cab. In 1975 Mack extended the cab around 4" directly behind the door. Look at a post '75 R cab and you will see a raised section that the grab handle is attached to, that section is not on pre. '75 cabs. Around this time Mack switched from a metal dash (like the one in the M.P.C. based kits) to a plastic dash (like the one in the A.M.T. R model kit) As for the engine and transmission You should be using the E6 2VH after cooled (as it is closest to a tip turbine engine from that era) engine from the Cruseliner kit along with it's trans. in the '88, in the '78 you could also use the engine from the DM 600 kit or the one from the R model kit . In either case the trans. in the DM 600 kit should not be used as it is not of the correct triple counter shaft Maxitorque type. The engine in the DM 800 kit should not be used as it was obsolete by 1978, but you can use the trans. As a side note, the cab in all the A.M.T. kit is incorrect for the dash. It is of the pre.
