Van Halen
Hi, over the past weeks ive been working on an 80's MPC camaro z28 kit.. all's been going well, i bought a nice nissan white and clear laquer (clear coat) for the finish.. As i was spraying the clear laquer last night, it all seemed fine and was looking like my best finish yet.. but as it was drying (near my radiator if that makes a difference ?) it started to yellow within minutes, i did second coat 15 mins after the first as instructed to do on the cans. and then left to dry over night to find nothing had changed.. Why has it done this ?? some other info- -Spray cans were a couple weeks old brought them new a couple weeks ago.. -after spraying the white base coat i lightly sanded it with 1500 grit to make it smooth as possible. -i then waited about 3 days for it to fully dry, then last night did the clear coat.. Darren B
I had the same thing happen with testors clear gloss. The can was fairly new and once I sprayed it, it came out yellow instead of clear. You could of had a bad can of clear. I suggest using clear coat in from a bottle that you can see if its clear or not then airbrush that on, if you have an airbrush. Jantrix
Wow. Man that sucks. I'm totally unfamiliar with that brand name. I've no idea why that happened. I doubt the heat had much to do with it.
CrewDawg15
Yeah you've gotta watch out for Halfords clear. Halfords sprays were my paint of choice while I was living in the UK...you couldn't beat the price compared to Tamiya. I had it happened to me a few times before I wised up. I would do test sprays on scrap bodies. If they yellowed, I bought another can and used the yellowing can on darker colored paints where it wasn't as noticeable. You cold try taking the body and paint back to the Halfrauds you bought it from. The body would prove the clear is defective and maybe get a refund or exchange...just look for a can with a different lot number stamped on it. Van Halen
Humm ... That wouldn't have been the '85 issue ,, molded in yellow would it ? It was molded in red, and its a 1982 kit, but i had primered white, then sprayed 2/3 base coats of white and was perfect until the clear laquer coats.. Junkman
I never ever, ever, never, ever use clear on white. Too many bad things happened and what you just experienced looks all too familiar. If I paint a model white, I only use a polishing kit.
