comp1839 Posted June 26, 2010 Author Share Posted June 26, 2010 thanks roy. just for general info. i try not use photographs for dimensions. the material lent to me were blueprints and hand sketches. parallax distorts the dimensiomnal quality of a picture. not that i haven't used a picture in a pinch but, i prefer drawings and prints or the real thing. cato, thank you too. the look i was after was early to mid seventies. the gentleman that lent me the material raced an alcohol funny car called shenandoah. maybe you've heard of him? harry hall is his name. as far as the belt goes. since they're real timing belts, the lettering is free when you buy the belt. Yes I have. Spent a lot of time at NY National Speedway and saw them all, Burgin, Hall, Manzo, the 'Cape Codders', Dom Santucci, Ramchargers, even JJ. Miss those days and the track. I've got to do something very similar on my scratchbuild, but don't fancy machining it, or doing it by hand. Tempted to get my head around photo-etching instead! I have learned an incredible amount too - thanks so much. Re the Donovan - did you use the wooden block as a pattern? If so, did you cast in aluminium (or another metal) or resin? comp1839 Posted October 3, 2010 Author Share Posted October 3, 2010 richard, thanks for the nice words on my work. i'm always glad to hear that something i've done has helped someone out. the product i am using to machine some of my work from, is called ren-shape. it is a machinable modelling foam. it comes in different densities, depending on how you are working it. the softer stuff works really well by hand. it holds it dimensions very well. is easily sanded, primed and then painted. some day i may try some aluminum casting, just because that would be very cool. the donovan masters were sent to a resin caster on another board that i belong to.
