Steve_L Posted April 11, 2015 Share Posted April 11, 2015 One of the fun things I like to do in the model car hobby is to build scale replicas of cars/trucks I have owned or driven. This is the sixteenth build in that series. These are pictures of a model of my 1989 Firebird Formula 350. I bought it new in 1988 and put almost 100,000 fun miles on it. The only customizing was to use a hot air gun to loosen and remove the "Formula 350" emblems from the doors and "5.7 Liter" emblems from the hood. I built the 1/24 scale model using the Revell 1992 Firebird Formula kit as a base. I added parts from the Revell 1985 Trans Am and 1991 Firebird Formula kits. I reproduced all the features of the 1:1 as faithfully as I could, including the aftermarket sun roof. It was a fun build that brought back good memories of high performance cruising in the 1:1. Building cars you've owned is what I seem to do a lot of and I'm lucky that about all but 2 are available in one form or another. I've also done a few of my wife's and Dad's cars. Steve, first let me compliment you on your build, it looks really good. Would you mind telling me what parts and pieces you used from each of the kits you mentioned? I had a 1990 Formula that I'd like to reproduce. Looking at the three kits you mentioned (on ebay), I see the '85 TA would supply the rear spoiler and the '92 the wheels and the body. I can't see what the '91 would supply though. Finally, where did you get the front bumper? Modify the '85 perhaps? Thanks for any info you can provide. Better yet, what about an '09 G8 GT?) I do love to build kits I remember growing up, though, so I totally get the buzz of building something you're familiar with. My brother did that with his ride, a '96 Caprice. It looks great and remember fun crusin' times is alwasy a great thing, even better when you're modelling! As you said, the 1992 Firebird Formula kit supplied most of the other parts. Also as you said, I modified the 1985 Trans Am front valance and added the black bumper strips to it and to the rear valance. Hope you have as much enjoyment with your project as I did with mine... I have plans (and kits, etc.) to build these cars, in no particular order: 1952 Ford Hardtop, 1960 Pontiac Catalina 4-Door Sedan, 1968 Biscayne 2- Door Sedan (Street Rod) and a 1970 Monte Carlo (bench seat, no rally wheels). If you know of a source (resin or diecast would be O.K.) I would also like to build a 2006 Dodge Ram Two Door pickup and a 2014 Ram Express pickup.
