best paint tech threads

I'm getting ready to start the paint and body work on the C5 Z06 I'm workng on. I've been reading and searching all the tech articles I can find. I was wondering if you guys could post links to your favorite suggestions for paint and body tips. As of now I plan on shooting 2-3 coats of primer, sanding with 600 grit in between while scribing out the body lines. Then blacking them out on the last coat....Its going tobe metalic blue paint so from what I read I can't sand and polish the base coat. I assume my only option will be to clear coat then cut and buff the clear.

This concerns me because I have had clear coat ruin several paint jobs in the past. Its just a pain for me because I never know how much is on there till its too much...LOL!

Thanks in advance for your time!

Sounds like you have it about right. Far as clear goes, if you get a rhythm going like you shoot your color, slightly overlap each coat, and pay attention to the wet edge, you should do fine. Let it flash and do it again. I start at the rocker panel on one side of the car, work up and over the side, over the roof and down the other side, making sure to squirt the ends while everything is wet. I prefer 3 fairly wet coats of Testors clear gloss lacquer, the first one shot fairly soon after the base color has flashed.

You're correct about not being able to sand metallics unless you like blotchy paint.

Thing is though, there are a bunch of techniques that work for different guys, and all can produce outstanding results.

PS. This looks better than the photo now that I've sanded and polished all of it.
