Just wrong on so many levels

How about a rear-engine pro-stock Group 88C prototype? Of course, I'll have to completely scratch-build the chassis, and I'll need a donor kit (probably a rear-engine dragster) for the transmission/rear end...

Yeah - the Hasegawa kit. I wanted to do something a bit... different. B)

The only problem so far is finding a rear-engine dragster in 1/24 scale. I think I'm going to have to settle for a 1/25, and cut the trans/rear off the motor and graft it onto a Boss 429...

I think it'll look pretty cool,one thing you might want to do after looking at the angle of the "hood"scoop, is add a piece to the snorkle end of it at an angle to catch the air better, just an idea. Do it, would like to see this.

Well, it *is* just a mock-up at this point. :P

I put the scoop on there just to give an idea of where I plan to mount the engine. I think it's the scoop I'm going to use, and if so, the front of it has to come down to a more appropriate angle, and I was thinking of blending the back in with the body so it looks like it's all one piece.

Sounds good. If you have any rear-engine dragsters, I'd appreciate pics of those as well. Google images ain't too forthcoming on the pics I need.

John, first off this looks like a damm cool project. 2ndly that style of snorkel scoop isn't generally used with supercharged ie dragster engines, its more to direct air downward into the carburetors on normally aspirated or nitrous oxide assisted ones. Here's a typical top fuel dragster engine

where you mount the motor and spacers between ie manifold and blower, blower and hat or tunnelram and carbs will help you get the height you need to clear the body/greenhouse. Going by the look, room-wise you might not even need a gearbox but more of a transfer case from the back of the motor directly to the front of the diff. Hope this has helped somewhat :P

Wow, GREAT builds there.

My problem is that the 88C is 1/24, and none of the rear-engine dragster kits are. However, I have a Glidden Pro-Stock T-bird that will be contributing the tries, wheels, and engine (so it's going to be a pro-stock kinda deal. That leaves the trans/rear or as you suggested, a transfer case. I was thinking I might be able to get a transfer case from a suitable Indy car or rear engine super car. If anyone has any ideas with regards to the transfer case (or trans/rear) in 1/24, I'm all ears. B)

BTW, the transfer case idea is a good approach because the car is so wide, I can probably fit the motor between the tires, even with the headers on it.

John, those look a little like the Cragar Belt Covers that came on the old an re-issued Challenger LSR car by Revell.They cover the mechanical blower drive that was used on the four engines that powered that car. If you can find some, maybe you could use those to design a gear transfer case. HTH B):D

I don't know much about drag racing (I'm mostly a Le Mans/Nascar/Trans Am kinda guy). What class of drag racing would a car like this fit into? What determines your class?

This car is a Le mans racer, not based on any stock-bodied car, and will be rear-engine (or mid-engine if you want to split hairs). I'd like to keep the scale in 1/24, but there aren't a lot of engine choices that I'm aware off (in kits, or as resin) with regards to that scale. Even the Ross engines are 1/25 scale.

I plan on putting the driver's eat on the ceterline of the car (like a rail dragster) because I don't need a hump for the transmission or driveshaft.

I was also planning on using the Glidden Boss 429 because it's "convenient", but if that is the wrong engoine for the class this car would likely be entered in, I would have to at least scrap the use of the tunnel ram and carbs, and then find/fabricate a 1/24-inch intake system for it that would be more appropriate. I'm open to ideas/suggestions.
