61 Impala from the 24 Hour Build Thread!

Well...I'm disappointed...my build is screwed by paint problems. I had this sucker all planned out. I had some Cobracolors acrylic lacquer kandy to do the orange but the moment I sprayed it, it developed the same problems I had with the 62 Corvette.....round spots that looked like fisheyes. There is nothing in my shop even remotely associated with any silicones and I washed the body with automotive paint degeaser/cleaner before painting! I just think my stash of Cobracolors paint is just too old. So I had to resort to painting with some enamel orange I had on hand. I used an old can of TruMatch #7 orange which was a good color. It went on fine with no spotting. But of course even with the dehydrator it never cured quite enough to work with. When I taped off to repaint the roof I got all kinds of trouble when I pulled the tape off. You just don't have enough time in a 24 hour build to use any paints that aren't fast drying!

So no big deal. I like how this was coming out so well I'm going to let it cure enough so I can just sand down those spots and repaint. I still had a lot of fun! And next year I'll be better prepared paint wise!

I got it figured out now. What happened was....I had to repaint the roof because a tiny spot of orange came through when I color sanded it. So I taped it off and reshot the roof. That came out nicely. However, I then threw it back in the dehydrator with all the tape still on it. THAT was my big mistake! The paint was still too soft and the heat made the tape kind of melt into the paint surface! I should have known not to do that as I didn't even really need to use the dehydrator because I had shot the roof with Krylon gloss black. And that stuff dries fast all on it's own. Duhhh.... Oh well, learned something and won't repeat that mistake again!

Here's a few suggestions for easy builds...AMT's '71 Duster or Charger, '67 Impala, Revell's '58 Firebird or '69 Camaro Convertible, any of their '32 Fords...there's quite a few really easy to build kits out there, I'm sure I missed quite a few!

Continuing on saving my 24 hour build disaster.... I have the body stripped, resanded, reprimed and the base coat of silver is on. Will let this gas out for a day or so then intend to paint it with some HoK Kandy Tangerine... While waiting for various body operations to dry I spent some time working on the 409. I have to say, this 409 from the Revell 62 Impala kit is the nicest 409 I've ever seen from any kit. I drilled the distributor cap with 9 .013 holes along with the cylinder heads and added the plug wires. Made up a coil and added that. Ran a vacuum hose from the distributor advance to the intake manifold. Ran a fuel line from the mechanical fuel pump to the carb inlet. Then I scatched up a generator because I can't find the doggone kit piece!! Grrr... To that I added a Photoetch generator bracket. I can see in the pics I have some little touchups to do on the paint...

Got the House of Kolor Kandy Tangerine on today... Sprayed over a silver base. Don't mind how light the roof is...that's going to be painted black like before the messup. I'll let this dry for a day or two, then shoot the black. Then let that dry and shoot the clear.... Then sand it out with Micromesh and buff it!

NICE WORK TERRY CAN YOU SHOW MORE PICS ON YOUR ENGINE STAND YOU GOT THERE LOOKS LIKE A WIRE STUCK IN THE TRANS? THANKS KEN

At first I was going to say that it's just the stand from the 34 Ford pickup kit until I looked at the photo you were referring to. Then I had to chuckle a bit...because it's just a chunk of styrofoam...you know...like the kind that comes as packing in most electronics boxes. I think this stuff came out of a box our TV was in when I unboxed it. I keep some of that stuff around for a few purposes and I wrap the perimeter of it with some tape just to hold it together better and it eliminates the stuff from crumbling off. Mostly I keep it on the bench because it's great for sticking sharp pointy things into it and they can be removed easily. I usually shove my X-Acto knives in a piece of it like in the picture. As for the engine stand part of it, that's a toothpick stuck into the tailshaft of the tranny and then into the side of the styrofoam block. But the styrofoam is so light I had to put a weight on top of it so the engine wouldn't fall over. So I just picked up the nearest heavy item in my wingspan at the time...my bench block. (Which incidentally, I made back in 1971 when I was a student in the Tool & Die Making course at Norwich Tech!) The tape helps the toothpick to stay in place too. I also use these blocks for spraying small items. I roll up some masking tape and stick a piece to the backside of the item I want to paint and then stick it to one of these blocks...then spray away. Makes it easy to handle the small parts also when you want to put them in the dehydrator. Any blocks that I want to use for painting though I cover completely with masking tape lest any foam particles escape and get in the paint!

Got it all painted...again! LOL HOK Black added topped with 3 coats automotive urethane clear. I'll let it cure for a couple of days and then color sand it and buff it out. But I'm still not happy with the color. The real one I am trying to come close to was not a Kandy color. It was Dupont 2002 Prowler Orange Pearl. So I bought another kit and I went to my local automotive paint store and had them mix me up 4 ozs of that color and that's what I plan to shoot the next one in! But that's okay...building this one prepares me for the next one!
