Florida car/truck builders

Recommended Posts

Several of us members of the Model Car Builders of Florida in the Ocala area are trying to take the present internet club and start a face to face club. We'll be meeting at the Hobby Lobby, 2400 SW College road, Ocala, Fl 34471 on August 6, Sept. 3, Oct. 1, and Nov 5, 2011 at 10:00am. All attendees are encouraged to bring a build or WIP.

Ocala seems to be a little to the left coast to me. I'm in Citrus Springs (SW of Ocala) and it takes me almost an hour to get up to Gainesville but I don't take 75. That's a very nice map, Brian.

Florida has MAGS and Table Top Cruisers but they're not local to the Ocala area. This new group plans to be active and try to keep people aware of our hobby. We have an IPMS chapter in Ocala but they're way into the planes and boats.

Several shows take place down here during the year - Jacksonville, Gainesville, Melbourne, Tampa - and are organized by the above named groups.

We almost had our meetings at Big Daddy Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing but we would have had to meet outside on his patio. Very reluctantly, we had to say no. Sometimes it gets humid down here and not much fun to sit outdoors. Sure would have been something to have a model car/truck club meeting at Don's museum.

Brian,

You see Meadow Woods there on your map, just South of Orlando and on the very edge of the map? If you were to go just a bit further south, you will see BuenaVentura Lakes. That is where I grew up. As of 2003, mom and dad left BVL for St.Cloud (pull the map a slight bit further south yet, and look to the east a small fraction), and that is home to me (even though I live in Ohio at the moment). Every year from 1986-97 I would run up the Turnpike/!-75 from Kissimmee to Gainesville for the Gatornationals, and almost as long to Mopars With Big Daddy. I know the areas well. When I got back from the Navy (2001), I lived in Ocoee (off Silver Star Road). That is why I say Ocala is about mid-state (by Google Map it is closer to the Gulf Coast than the Atlantic Coast) on I-75/Turnpike. I miss home and can't wait to be able to go back, but one has to go where the money is. I would LOVE a large tract of land down by Yeehaw Junction (go south out of St.Cloud on Vermont street and it will turn into Canoe Creek Road and take you down that way)to retire to.

Like I said, I truly do wish you guys the best in your quest for a personal club, as Florida truly needs one.

Jim, nothing wrong with the patio. Just try to work something out between October and April... Will try to make it if I'm in town. Only 1-1/2 hours away (from Lakeland).

Hobby Lobby in Ocala, August - November, 1st Saturday, 10am. December we might hold a meeting in Orlando or Jacksonville.

Jim, I'll do my best to make the meetings at Hobby Lobby in Ocala......if I bring models with me they will be more than likely 1/12th or 1/8th scale. Will that be a problem? If so, I won't bring them.

I was hoping we'd hear from you, Don. Scale doesn't matter - we're a car/truck club. Just make sure you bring that stage coach build. Okay?

The August meeting is going to be on the tense side. We have business to take care of(officers, dues, name, logo, membership applications, bank, club alliliation, and more) before the fun stuff.

Alright pal, I'll see if I can get a little more done on the coach and bring it with for show and tell. Sounds like you have pretty a well filled plate just taking care of biz.

It wouldn't hurt if you rattle my cage when it gets a little closer so that I don't get side tracked...do you have my E addy? If not I'll PM it to you.

If you want, contact me privately and I'll work up some sketches for a logo to toss on the table at the meeting.

Yup. August 6, 2011, 10:00am, Hobby Lobby in Ocala on SR200 (College ave). Everyone is welcome to bring a build, something in progress, or whatever. The store opens at 9:00am. The meeting will start at 10:00am. There's several decisions that need to be made for the club before we can play.

Hope you can make it up to us, Clay. This is a brand new, out of the box, model car/truck club. We're hoping to help boost model car/truck building. We have some ideas/plans and we hope things will work out for us - it'll all depend on our members.

All the way to the back of the store and towards the right side, Wayne. They call it their hobby or meeting room. Don't forget your HL 40% off coupon. And we have Rob's Hobby World just a few miles down the road that offers us a 10% discount all the time.
