Mackvision Posted May 25, 2014 Share Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) After I finish my Road Boss my next possible project will be a replica of my Fathers 1:1 1972 White-Freightliner,it will need to be converted to the older "stirrup-step" cab style,and I will also need another engine, as it was powered by a 1693 Cat. cappy625 Posted May 25, 2014 Share Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) hello mark, looking at your pictures the amt kit is pretty close to the year of your dads truck. the steps that come with the kit were something freight liner was experimenting with from what I was told, so they were only avalible on a low number of trucks. a lot of guys who build this kit close the opening and put a single step on it. probably what your dads truck had. I only ever built this kit once and it was right out of the box. and from hanging around this forum for a while I learned a lot. like two things I never notice about this kit was the head lights are to high, and the front wheels stick out to far. other than that the only thing you'll need is the 1693 which I remember seeing in resin some where. old buckaroo is a member here that back dated his freightliner and did an excellent job on it. if you go back to page 4 in the under glass section you'll see his 1968 freightliner. I may PM Sean and get some pointers on how he closed in the cab bottom and filled the steps. I also intend to drop the headlights down slightly,they just don't look right compared to the 1:1. txdieseldog Posted May 26, 2014 Share Posted May 26, 2014 Mark, I have not converted this cab to stirrups, but you might like the direction it's headed. I have a WIP that got stored and is now in the repair pile. Also North American Van lines. It has a DROM box added and a DD swapped into it on a frame stretch. Old Buckaroo Posted May 27, 2014 Share Posted May 27, 2014 (edited) That first picture is fabulous. The old Freightliner cabovers are one of my most favorite trucks. Feel free to drop a pm on adding the skirts - I used a sleeper from a "California Hauler" to make mine. Found it easier to cut and remove then patch it in. The cab curve was a perfect match also.
