If that was a street car version, I'd have a perfect licensee plate for yea, CATNIP! LOL! Get it?

I wonder if I can build a KS Jaguar out of those! At least I think that's the same model Koenig did. I'll have to see if I can find a photo of one and post it.

Anyway, nice detailing, especially the wheels, look's very realistic! Wiring on the engine is awesome too!

better late than never, i did some research and found:

250px-Jaguar_5.3_V12_Engine.jpg

shows me a couple of areas of improvement like removing the EFI harness and trimming it down to sit lower. and i should make some sort of airboxes which the kit seems to have ignored completely.

like i said, better late than never!

thanks again for looking, more pics to come.

Hmmm... no update from Bill in over 3 months. I hope this one hasn't found it's way to 'model cars- the dead zone' It's too cool to give up on!

Meantime if ya need reference pics, I have some. Go to:

Jump to page 4 for some XJ TWR pics. Hope this helps.

hey folks thanks for bringing this back up; i was going to update it soon as i have made a little progress and actually hope to get it done by NNL West for sure if not the end of the year.

>and i should make some sort of airboxes which the kit seems to have ignored completely.

i was totally wrong there: there are in fact some really cool airboxes and cooling routing under the hood so that is taken care of! maybe i should look at the instructions! :)

oh and that blue material is for making the seat harness arrangement that a lot of the photoetch is for. its actually what i will be doing next when i get a chance to spend time on it, so i will post some pics. its pretty standard stuff for harness making but i am interested in seeing how that material works out. i believe there are decals supplied for the belts so that plasticky material might work well.

well some progress to report!

first coats of paint are on but of course there is some clean up to do. there were darn seam marks right across the bonnet that of course i could not see until the paint was laid down! so the bonnet has been re-prepped and is ready for a second go at it. the body is looking good except that i failed to mask the front flares correctly so i have to go back and mask and shoot them green...shouldnt be too big a deal. there is a bit of paint distortion between the green and white right where the flares meet the body that needs to be cleaned up too. i think the clear between colors crept up under the masking somehow. it always happens. paint is tamiya pure white and racing green, and the green is surprisingly close to the box art so i am happy about that.

leftfrontonworkbench.jpg

rightrearonworkbench.jpg

and just now, like right now just now, finished up the interior. the seat belts were pretty much a hairy bear but they look very nice now and the strange blue material they supply to make the belts actually works out very nicely. it lays flat like you want them to look, but it probably took me an hour of fiddling around with them to get them to look natural. its one thing for them to be there and another to look like they really belong there. the photoetch buckles and hooks really work well and the little p/e anchor points look cool too. this was all out of the box by the way. the recaro seat looks cool sprayed testors go mango and then weathered with some black and red wash. dashboard is pretty detailed and mostly it was just a bit of paint and future.

niceinteriorfromrightre.jpg

interiorfromrightfront.jpg

interiorfromleftfront.jpg

dashboardcloseup.jpg

so now i have to finish up the paint and just final assembly left i think!

still might be awhile!

ok back from the dead as it were, the jaguar has had its paint applied, front flares painted (i forgot when i was masking :D ), doesnt look great but ok for now...still need to do a color sand to blend the ridges and a coat of clear then the decals...but the rest of the components are done and waiting for good weather to lay on the clear!

components await the call:

this one will hopefully be done by the anniversary of my first post in this thread...

but i aint betting the pink slip on that.

as mentioned, some progress, decals on and clear coated and doing some detail painting and beginning final assembly of various components to each other!

paintcompleteonbox.jpg

paintcomplete2.jpg

the paint aint all it could be so i may polish it out a bit in places or at least give the whole thing a coat of Future in a week or so. as mentioned elsewhere the side stripe decals completely disintegrated (strange because the rest of them went on without a hitch) so i took some Tamiya masking tape, thin stuff, and painted it body color then cut out thin strips that i applied before clear coating decals. looks very nice i must say, much better than i thought it would turn out.

thanks again for looking!

a bit of one step forward two steps backward but an update is in order.

mounted the rear wheels and tires and in the time between when i assembled the rear axle assembly and now, things literally disintegrated, which was a bit of a blessing actually, since the wheels mounted as they were sat on entirely different planes and in a different plane altogether from the front suspension! so i basically put some epoxy on the control arms, on the brake hubs to mount to the wheels and aligned everything by gosh and by golly and let it sit to harden. come back later and looks sweet. but then i notice that the wheels probably should have been mounted inboard about an eighth of an inch from where they are. and they are now solid. the look isnt terrible, sort of like a teenagers fairlane with the rear end jacked up and no muffler, but not really the look im after. heres some photos with the body sitting on the chassis...the front wheel/tire is only mocked up, i might set the height a bit higher than it is here, since there is a significant air dam thingamabob thats not on the front end. all in all a disappointment in the stance department, its really too bad i didnt trial fit more but it was a real pain and i was in immediate danger of dropping or launching the chassis so i said just glue it and there you have it.

the more i dwell on it the more likely i am to get out the circular saw on the dremel and show those wheels a thing or two about whos boss here!

here is a front shot, obviously a lot of body detailing and finishing up engine compartment to do still but coming along. stance looks ok from this angle though you see what i mean about the fairlane look:

frontrightside.jpg

a look at the offending rear wheel/tires:

rightrearside.jpg

closer...oh the horror!

reartireinterference.jpg

engine compartment, body will sit down at least another 1/8" but there will still be gap between the fenders and inner fenderwell:

enginecompartment.jpg

bottom line though: i just dont really love it. sits funny. dont really want to get drastic because it will probably destroy some detail underneath, but i might. i sure wish i had cut about an eighth off each brake hub so the wheels would tuck in there nicely. darn.

oh well i will probably finish it up and move on...it will probably look alright but nothing to show the kids.

Yeah, Bill...you've got to fix those rear wheels. This one is looking too good to leave them the way they are...

Hang in there, you know you can save it!!

Like our friend Curt always tells me, "model building is nothing more than a series of fixing mistakes".

yep raul, that couldnt stay that way.

went to bed last night and tossed and turned asking myself: what would bill geary do about it?

and it was obvious: tear it apart and try again. so i got up at like 3am and looked at it, started twisting stuff around, figuring its already messed up, i cant really do it much harm, and it ended up coming apart semi successfully. so i got out the dremel and the saw blade and started hacking off part of the wheel hub so the wheels will sit further inboard. may have actually relieved too much but it looked good last i left it to dry up. tonite i think i will attempt to put the wheels back on and see what happens. one will be easy but the other i will have to just goop it up with some epoxy, pose it and let it dry. should hopefully turn out ok. plus all the stuff i had to get gorilla with and was worried about preserving the detail: all that, suspension arms, wheel hubs and brakes etc, that will all be hidden inside the incredibly deep wheels so no real worries there.

will try to post improved situation pics later.

thanks again for looking!

alright, definately looking better now, i think Raul and Bill both would agree! (and I only bring Bill Geary into this because I have been in awe of his work for years now and he is kinda up there on another plane for me)

looks much more business like now, and now hopefully to continue. i see i am going to have a fit issue with what looks like the corner edges of the dashboard hitting the front-of-windshield cowl so maybe some dremel therapy is in order down there. plus some body detail painting that i hope to get done tonite.

many thanks again for looking!

improved right profile, still needs the ground effects piece on the front obviously:

rightsidefromfront.jpg

frontandrightside.jpg

close look at the rear wheels and wells...now neatly tucked in there:

rightrearcorner.jpg

and you can see how this thing is practically tubbed...those are huge width tires, hard to believe they are actually to scale!

well while the season is working its way around to good painting weather to shoot the Wild Dream, I decided to move on to something thats been in my "to do" pile for quite awhile now: a kind of obscure Hasagawa kit of a Jaguar XJ-S HE works car. This model is really very nice looking and I was impressed from the first i opened the box: photo etch details, piping for brake ducting, excellent looking body and parts castings, what turned out to be very excellent fit and finish of the body kit and the parts count in general. oh yeah did I mention this comes with full motor detail? Pretty cool!

All I've done so far beyond fondle the plastic is to prep the chassis for paint, which also included some filling and drilling of holes per instruction sheet, and do some test fitting of body parts etc.

The detail level of this kit appears pretty impressive as well: the interior is a tub stripped of luxuries with recarro seat and fuel cell and full cage roll bar. The chassis depicts detail of unknown accuracy but with some very busy looking race suspension going on. should come up nice with some paint and care.

anyway heres some photos and be sure to follow along as I progress (or not, as the case may be)...the paint is going to be the challenge for me with the two tone bit but I am praying to the gods of tamiya for help on the way!

Has anyone here ever built this model? Any hints or tips or photos?

the box top:

<a href="http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=boxfront.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/350/boxfront.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

the body from front, note how well the panel lines line up on the separate front clip/ground effects:

<a href="http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=goodbodyfront.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3499/goodbodyfront.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

and from the rear, sorry about the less than pro quality photos:

<a href="http://img27.imageshack.us/my.php?image=goodbodyrear2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4171/goodbodyrear2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

heres the photoetch fret, pretty darn complete for not having to "inch up" (read: "bucks up")

<a href="http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image=photoetch.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/786/photoetch.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

heres one of the engine sprues, note the hairy exhaust system:

<a href="http://img25.imageshack.us/my.php?image=motorsprue.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4282/motorsprue.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

some hop up parts included:

<a href="http://img26.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hopupsprue.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/7092/hopupsprue.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

some assorted cool stuff: orange ducting hose, wheels, decal sheet and photo etch

<a href="http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=coolparts.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1040/coolparts.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

close up of really nice slotted Jaguar works rims:

<a href="http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=decalsandrims.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1778/decalsandrims.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

finally chassis and parts prepped and ready for DP-40 simulation color:

<a href="http://img7.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chassisprepped.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3214/chassisprepped.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

I have this kit, but the instructions are missing. Is it possible for you to supply a copy of the instructions? I will of course pay the necessary shipping expenses etc.

  • 1 year later...

well, i may have mentioned wanting to clear my workbench for a bunch of new projects this year, so id decided to get back to this oldie, been a couple years since i have done much but look at it. last i checked there were some fit issues, especially with a photoetch screen i had bent slightly wrong and that required some cutting or something to get the body to fit onto the chassis. then it appeared the interior might interfere with the body on final assembly and i wished i had waited to glue the interior tub to the chassis and instead had glued it to the body itself and then fitted the chassis to the body/interior assembly.

but i am happy to report that a little serious fiddling and pushing here and pulling there and well you know the drill: force the thing to the point where it almost, but not quite, distintegrates in your hands but instead you get stuff to look almost right...and it looks pretty much almost right! heres a couple of photos to refresh your memories...i had to go back over the thread to remember where i left off. as you can see all the trim is mounted, i need to finish up a couple pieces under the hood, then mount the front wheels and brakes then finish up a few details like the roof antennae. back end still sticks up just a bit but i think once i have the front tires on i can convince it to sit down over the tires a bit more...want to see how the front fit to check final stance.

anyway thanks again for your patience and this might get finished up in a couple weeks if the Lords willin and the crick dont rise...and with our current drought conditions its not likely the latter will be a problem!

bodywithmotor.jpg

thanks again for looking and of course comments, questions etc gladly entertained!

ps: jaguar fan, i dont remember if we sorted the instructions but if you are still out there and need a copy of them please inbox me and we can get that done.
