Side pipes - need a how to

Recommended Posts

I'm building a 1/24 Camaro muscle car that I want side pipes on, and I really hate most kitted side pipes.

Who has made their own and how did you do it?

Styrene, aluminum, brass? How did you do the bend at the opening?

The 1:1 units tend to be multi-piece configurations and I would make a set the same way. The first thing you will want to do is decide what diameter you want them to be. Determine how radical the bend needs to be and figure out what material to use- plastic or metal- based on what you feel most comfortable bending. If you go with metal, a tubing bender works well and tends to do the job without kinking it. The plastic tube method can be warmed in water to make it more flexible but whenever I have bent a plastic tube, I have inserted a solid piece to help keep it from kinking.

The flared end of the side pipe can be made by bending it at a 90 degree angle and then cutting it at the desired opening.
