What's the most expensive kit you've ever bought?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine just bought the Model Factory Hiro 1/12 scale '64 Ferrari 250 GTO. List price $750!! He showed me the kit. It has a mind boggling number of parts and the level of detail is amazing but WOW is it expensive. For instance the wire wheels are built up using individual spokes(!)

LOL.......You don't even want to know! It's not so much how much I spent on a kit but the total invested in a particular kit after adding all the aftermarket goodies to it! I have one truck kit with over a thousand just in parts. I bought a scratch built bulldozer for 300.00 and just had the correct tracks 3D printed for it and they are going to cost me 225.00, just for the tracks!

from my old collection, I would have said the 1/48 C-130 Hercules. That kit was a monster. So were the 1/8 Corvette and Camaro I used to have. Currently, I would have to say it was one of the anime garage kits. I've paid upwards of $50 each for some of those. No wonder that site says I'm a VIP. :)

This is a really interesting question regarding car modeling culture and what type of modeler is willing to pay how much for what kind of kit. As we know, many on this forum have opinions on what's worth the investment and what isn't, averaging up to about $40-$50 for a typical 1/25 kit. But we have many others, such as those identified above, who are willing to pay hundreds for a rare and highly detailed kit of a subject that interests them. Then there are the large-scale Pocher builders who pay around $1,200 for a kit, plus that much or more for aftermarket parts.

The most I've paid for a kit was about $125 for a 1/12 Ferrari, and it truly wasn't worth it. Typically, in my large-scale buys of 1/16 and 1/12, I've spent about $50 - $75 for these kits.

Good to know what the going prices may be, which can be helpful to our members.

My current Pocher Rolls Sedanca (in tools, materials and the ebay kit), at this point in construction, cost more than my 1:1 Shelby aluminum cylinder heads (the parts only-my labor) for the Cobra.

And I've still got roughly $400 more to go in aftermarket bronze-cast body detail parts.

I'm not sorry.

first one i bought my own self... 1956 F-100 by Revell. 1978 or so. cost around 3 dollars..... the first purchase in a thirty-six and running year obsession with polystyrene representations of automobiles that has probably cost, in any given year, anywhere from a hundred bucks or so to several hundred.....

most expensive one that comes to mind was the pair of Matadors i bought a few years back, i think they both ran about 60 bucks.
