ZTony8
My Mom's house is finally sold and now my daughter and I face clearing out the place. My Mom had accrued so much stuff in the 50+ years she lived there(yeah, she hoarded) that it's gonna take several weekends of sorting out what she wants to keep and what we can leave behind for the purchaser's guys to toss out. Then,of course,of the kept items, she wants to sort through them at my house.I can see already that my house is gonna be a defacto storage locker. We already know that the large items are to go to storage but the smaller things(dish sets, gloves, scarves, etc)are going to clog up my place until spring when I'm having a huge yard sale.I don't wish this task on anyone.Ugh! High octane
I've been in your shoes several years ago when my mom passed away. She had a three bedroom apartment and two of the bedrooms were LOADED with stuff, a lot of it brand spankin' new. Luckily I had two cousins to help me out and we got the apartment completely emptied in five weeks. We donated a lot to charity and also gave a lot to a resale shop owner. It was a "big job." Tom Geiger
I've done this several times, my parents, my wife's parents, my grandparents and two aunts houses! What I can tell you is to be careful as you sort things. In my instances, I found valuables hidden in common things, and my father had documents and family pictures in the most unusual places. The most recent was my in-laws house in 2013, we were fortunate it was spring and we had a garage sale in the house. We brought the small stuff outside, but marked big furniture in it's place and let people walk through the house. It's tough to dismantle the home you grew up in. Every drawer is full of memories, things you remember using as a kid, and you're tempted to save everything. Good luck.

ZTony8
What may surprise is that I'm not too attached to the house, having moved out of it over 27 years ago.Yes,I have memories of living in it but most of my stuff came with me back then. The few things I still have there I'll bring home. ZTony8
Thieves broke in again and stole stuff from the house. The closing can't be soon enough for me.This is causing WAY too much stress in my life. mikemodeler
Sorry that the stress is getting to you Tony, hopefully the sale comes soon and you can get past this chapter. I helped my parents with several "junk reduction projects" and it is never easy but once you are done, it is a great feeling.
ZTony8
The movers came this past Saturday.Things went smoothly, thank goodness.I went back on Sunday for what I thought was going to be a quick one time light load.WRONG!!!!!! It turned into a 5 hour, two load, cram the car to the sides adventure. That part is done. Now I have to assimilate the stuff into my house, tossing what I can't use and getting things ready for a large springtime yard sale.
