blackandwhite Posted August 22, 2014 Share Posted August 22, 2014 Im trying to switch from the small cans of Tamiya clear (semi gloss is what I have now) to a larger can (say Krylon for example, since its what I already purchased) I bought a can of Krylon ColorMaster CoverMax Gloss Clear. I sprayed a spoon purple with tamiya from a rattle can. Waited a few hours and went to spray the krylon over it and it seemed to wash away/move the paint and not 'coat' it I tried doing some research on the clear that I have here, but I couldnt come up with an answer as to whether or not it was a good product. Ive seen claims that krylon is no longer what it used to be, but am looking for a good can of 'department store' clear that works over tamiya aerosols and acrylics, as well as some of testors one coat lacquers, and even model master enamels for that matter Any help to a direct product would be great. Ace-Garageguy Posted August 22, 2014 Share Posted August 22, 2014 Duplicolor automotive clear in rattlecans from the auto-parts stores will work well over Duplicolor colors, as well as Testors basecoats (NOT ENAMELS) and Testors "one coat" lacquer. Ill have to look into where carries this locally to me Lacquers will dissolve or eat the Acrylics. Testor's Dullcote, Semigloss Clear and the original Gloscote are safe to use over the Acrylics. Enamel clears would be OK but most tend to yellow. Future has a tendency to crack over the Acrylics. These problems are worse when using a rattle can because of the wetness of the coat. Mike Kucaba Posted August 23, 2014 Share Posted August 23, 2014 I've sprayed lacquer over acrylics. Automotive PPG thinned with PPG thinner and airbrushed. Nothing really from a home improvement or Walmart type store Rust-Oleum makes a gloss clear lacquer that is excellent for hobby use. Buy it, you'll like it.
