dragstrip diorama

hey guys

i have had plans to build a dragstrip for a while now but i finally got started

this will be my second diorama so dont expect anything miraculous ;)

the base will be a 21,5 inch wide peice of 3/8th partical board

it will depict the staging area and starting line

the back of the dio will be a 5 foot tall retaining wall with a fence on top of it

the front will be open but i am planning on making that look like concrete

( so only the actual lanes will be paved with asphalt)

the concrete will get plaster on it to hide the wood grain, the asphalt will be black sand gleud on

(the black sand might be too black but i can always spray paint it right? )

i will also build the 5 foot tall devider in between the two staging lanes

i am planning on putting a water hose on there

the tree will be courtesy of smart-resins (seemed fitting to trade a set of drag tires for it)

and as always feel free to suply advise or ideas

(the pics are not too great but it shows the idea

( i still need to isntall the fence but again, you get the idea)

Sounds like it will be amazing once its finished. I need to do something similar for my gassers...

... Maybe I should recreate lions. ;)

thanks ;)

i actually thought about recreating an existing strip

but then i decided to take the easy way out

im thinking of calling it thunder alley

i got some more work done to it yesterday, i layed the concrete and put a cout of primer on both walls

i also cut down a peice of screen door to serve as a wire link fence

(that looks pretty good actually)

i think im ready to pave the asphalt today :D

Eelco , take a Belt sander and rough out the particle board a bit and spread Bondo out over the board . You can then " Finish Sand " the bondo and usea mix of black and several greys to create a decent asphalt finish . By the way which engine did you chose to put into the 56 Ford ? Ed Shaver

Sheet rock mud is cheaper than bondo ...

... and automotive trunk paint comes out of the can in an asphalt texture with black, grey and white specks already mixed in ...

Then just fog on some cheap flat black to get the desired darkness.

You can roll a pair of tires or drag slicks through a puddle of flat black paint to get the burnt rubber effect at the line too.

thanks for all the advise guys

i allready slapped on a thin coat of spackling on the side of the strip

i sanded and painted it too look like concrete

for the actual strip i have some very fine dark grey/almost black sand that i am going to gleu on

that should give me the right colour and texture for the asphalt :)

excelent idea on the tires too, i was planning on airbrushing some burn rubber marks at the line but that might look better ;)

as for the ford engine....

well guys,

the strip is close to being done

all i have left is paint the fence posts , put up some sponsor banners , build the faucet and hose for the burnouts and paint the lines on the asphalt

(i guess i should also install the tree)

the asphalt is far from perfec but here are a few pics, i guess with the cars on it it is not that bad B)

looks good . I used foam board much lighter.

that is a nice raceway you got there

i used foamboard for my garage diorama because its a much larger diorama then the strip

also i wanted to have a back fence and it needed a concrete (wood) wall to put the fence on

and so i decided that wood would be the way to go on this one

(heres a pic of the garage)

hey guys

got some work done on the alley today

it looks like all that is left to do is finish up the tree and maybe slap some tire rub markings on the far retaining wall

i also want to ad a calling card from my LHS to the fence as another billboard
