Need help "fixing" water damaged kit

Recommended Posts

I'm sure some of you have had to deal with this problem before and any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I recently received a kit that had been water damaged and it had a real bad musty smell. I thought it was just the box and got rid of it promptly. No luck. After de-chroming some of the parts in bleach and then a good soak/scrubbing in Simple Green, the odor is still VERY present. It's an older Protar kit that is not easily replaced,so I would like to salvage this if possible. I'm going to try to get a few parts in primer today in hopes that maybe this will "seal" it...?? Open to suggestions, please and thank you...

I've never heard of plastic absorbung odors. At least not model car plastic. ONCE i got a kit that smelled of moth balls, but never smelled plastic that was just soaked. Maybe it was something caustic, cause I've never heard of styrene absorbing odors. but hey anything is possible. Maybe washing it in something strong, like Simple Green, or New Dawn with grease cutters, would wash the smell away. I've never heard/smelt any plastic that absorbed odors. Maybe it was TOO porous, an absorbed them. Very intersting thing to have happen.....Hmmmmmmm.
