What did you get today? (Model Car Related Items)

My paint order came in the mail today. I had ordered two cans, each for $20 plus $9 postage, so each costs $24.50. I actually only needed one right now, but the postage cost was the same, so I got two cans for known projects. And of course who could not do some quick test squirts upon arrival?

The can on the left is Ford C-6 1972-4 Goldenrod. Someone had recommended that California Mustangs had all the Mustang colors, but apparently not this one. So I went to the Automotive Touchup website instead.

After having a pleasing experience replicating my wife's sister's Chevette, I've decided to give this one a whirl. This is the 1974 V6 Mustang II my wife owned when I met her. She bought it a year old from a friend who moved away. I have a Morgan Auto Detail 1977 Mustang II coupe body that I will add the 1974 nose from a kit I have for the project.

And the second can is 1991 Geo yellow to replicate my vehicle. I bought this new and 240,000 miles later, I still have it. The Fujimi kit is the Suzuki version and is a hardtop but we will build it. Now I have the paint so I have no excuse!

And I got a new avatar photo! My aunt (my father's youngest sister) sent me a bunch of old family photos, and here's one of my father when he was two years old. The car was my grandfather's 1932 Essex (he traded his 1932 Chevy roadster for it straight up when my father was born in 1934!) Photo is marked 1936 on the back. Check out the art deco skirts on the wagon! Super cool!

How complete are the old kits?

Nice hall .

All are complete, most parts still on the tree. You've got to buddy up with your local flea shop owners and vendors to get a access to a stash like this. I have several that will give me a call when they come across models and give me first shot at them. Don't low-ball them as most do their homework and be sure to put them on your Christmas card list.

Got a couple of things from Ebay over the last week. First is a 1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 promo model. Considering the prices of most of these, I stole it. And, I was the only bidder. Also, the only bidder, I got a MPC 1970 Pontiac GTO. Gonna make a Judge out of it if I can find a good donor kit for the chassis and suspension. Finally, and I didn't get it yet, I have a rear T/A spoiler for the Firebird from a member here on the forums on the way.

I ordered the Tamiya LaFerrari as a happy birthday present and James hooked me up with an Aoshima Aventador and an Italeri Subaru race team set. No pictures yet but I will have some when my LaFerrari gets here, now if only a company had a P1 kit I could set along side my LaFerrari.

Went to the Mid-Atlantic NNL this weekend in Severna Park, Md and found some nice stuff.

First up is the birthday present I bought for myself, a 1959 Dodge 2 door hardtop. There was a real one parked in my neighborhood when I was a teenager in the mid 80's and I've beenfascinated obsessed with them since. I'm guessing this is an X-El redo of the old Jo-han kit. Anyway, paid $40 for it. Just need a Modelhaus interior tub.

For a long time I detested any and all MPC kits, mostly because of the horrible flip-nose kits I had by them and the fact they're almost always molded in black or red and have been hard to paint. Since I've grown up and use primer now, that isn't a problem and these forgotten 80's cars from Detroit will get built. I really dig the box art on the mid-eighties MPC kits, too.

I bought this bag o' truck for $1 and most of the parts are there except the engine and tires. So here's my idea: Like they do occasionally on shows like Fast 'N Loud, I think I'm just going to clean up the body with some soapy water, fix or replace what's broken (like the frame and suspension) and put a big, newer engine in it, some new tires and rims, and add some detail to the cab (paint the rubber seal around the windshield, paint the wipers, etc).

Anybody got a spare windshield?

Then there's this guy... I bought this and another built model, a '63 or so Corvette for $3 in an old Gangbusters model kit box. I gave the Corvette to my buddy and had plans to tear this one apart and redo it the way I did an old '32 Ford ( see http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=75266#entry947120 )

So here's the dilemma: a couple guys took a look at it and said it was an original 1960's issue of this model and it's historic and a shame to take apart / tear up change a complete kit that's an example of kit building from that era. I know what I think, but just thought I'd ask you all.

Now for the good stuff, the parts I got from Jerry Frazier. Been looking forward to hitting up his parts table since last year at NNL.

A whole bag of 1/25 tools for a quarter, laptop, shelf stereo, one of those weird animal things you attache brake lights to, and a 1/25 .50 cal machine gun. Could be useful.
