Peterbilt 352 Wrecker

Recommended Posts

Heres a new project thats coming along pretty quickly. I realized that I only have built two cabovers ever, so it was time to build one. For a brief time my dad had a yellow and white Pete 352 with a dump body on it. My dad was notorious for turning any piece of junk he could get his hands on into a dump truck. He once had a 359 with a sleeper with a dump body on it(ridiculous). Anyhow, thats what I started out building just because it was too silly not to. Part way through, I bought a 2nd 352 because I wanted to build a cabover version of the AMT Pete Wrecker. When the wrecker kit came in the body was already assembled, and because I had cut it down to a daycab the wheelbase was already perfect. So thats how it turned into the wrecker. The next one will be the dumper. Anyway, I was building the kit detroit engine but now its going to Petetrucker. Im about to resin cast a 250 cummins, so the first one is going in this truck. I scratch-built some better cab hinges, cut the cab down to a lean 63", took .290 out of the width of the wrecker bed, moved the tanks forward, cut the bed to fit around the tanks, made some knurled alum fuel caps, cut a window out of the front of the bed, and added .100 strips to the frame to raise the bed. I have big plans for the wrecker equipment that will be kept under wraps until I get a little further. Tell me what you think.

The story about your Dad's creations are awesome ! You have any pictures of those "Dump Trucks " ?

My Dad took a 1952 GMC coe Dump truck and made it into a Backhoe !

I am already hooked on your project ;) This will be a fun one to watch progress.

The pics I have of his trucks are his Autocar wrecker( thats still my favorite truck to this day) and the 359 with the sleeper before the dump body. Sadly that truck was broken in half by the dump body because of a poorly welded ram. What a tragedy. I have an IH 4300 before and after paint. It was a former borden milk truck. Theres a 359 with the wing, and a 2nd Autocar that he had much later.

I didnt mean to rob this kit of the motor, but now you get use your 1st resin cast. So its a bad thing turned into a good thing.

Thats gonna be real nice set up. Its gonna look awesome. Both, the wrecker and dump. Thanks for all the help, given me inspiration to just go and do it, something new and difficult

Terry, thanks for taking the time to post those pics. I really like the Autocar wrecker myself. That 4300 sure looked fancy after the repaint - nice color combo. And the Pete with the wing - Wow B)

I really miss seeing that era of trucks on the roads.

The pic of the Autocar was taken in the middle of it being repainted. It was all red when he bought it, then he repainted grey & blue. I remember we had to go pick it up in the middle of paint to go unload a stack of Macks at the dealership. It was a rush job, so we threw some Harley Davidson headlights on it and drove it there with no hood. I still remember the fan throwing the rain everywhere. This pic must have only been taken a day or so after that. That Freightliner was pretty messed up. The tire blew and ripped the front axle halfway off and destroyed the hood.Right after the re-paint, the Holmes 750 was sold and fifth wheel was put on and the truck wasnt around long after that. That truck is the reason Autocars are my favorite.

Heres some pics of the 250 Cummins Im workin on.I machined some 4 groove pulleys, made the exhaust manifold dump from the center, reworking the intake manifold got rid of the upper pulley, and mounting plate. I still need to relocate the starter to the opposite side, and scratch build the older style oil cooler.Im also detailing a fuller gear box and adding a resin auxillery. Idk if any cabovers had twin sticks, but Im pretty sure my dads old transtar did.

I got the mesh guard made for the window and framed in tiny angle. Ill let the cat out of the bag on what Im doing with the booms. Im still waiting on the 2nd kit to come in, but there will be dual booms. They will be fully rotating in sort of a Holmes style. So Im calling this a Holmes/Hientz body.
