Plymouth Superbird

Hello, this will be my first ever car model kit build so bear with me, I'm not expecting 100% success but I'm going to try at least. I thought it could be a neat project both to build and to document so I have something to look back to later since I'm suspecting, and hoping, that this is a hobby that i will keep doing for quite some time.

I decided to start with a Revell Streetburner 1970 Plymouth Superbird. I'm going to build it box stock. Sorry guys and gals this might be a bit boring :(.

I'm a big fan of Mopars and love to learn about them and study them so getting this model was quite obvious for me, of course i could had gone with a 69' Daytona but since the Suoerbird were built more for the aesthetics i thought this would be more suited for model building, i also bought a 71' Plymouth 'Cuda but that im not sure if I will post a topic about, depends on how this one goes and so on.

Here's the parts in their bags:

I forgot to take pictures of them outside the bags but they will be covered later in the build as i get to them :) .

Appreciates all kinds of feedback.

Wow such a support! I thought this would be a dull thing that wouldn't be appreciated at all :D . I'm going to go slow both to get it as good as possible and to not "burn myself out", if that makes any sense. Next update will be up tomorrow.

-I agree with everyone's post, you could NOT have picked a better one to start with the AMT version of the same car, (I got one) leaves A LOT to be desired of in the kit, BUT it after-all was a gift from my uncle, BUT you with the Streetburner version from Revell/Monogram, is a WAY better kit.... It fits together much better then the old worn out AMT of the same car!

Whats ya plans for the engine and car colors? B)

You don't have to chop them up into little pieces to do a nice build Sonny.

You'll never bore me with a stock build.

I've always been of the frame of mind that someone got paid big bucks to design cars so that they were aesthetically pleasing to the mass public.

They didn't pick garage mechanic bob from down the street to design them.

So personally, I've always felt that in general, the manufacturers did it right. & even if they didn't, I feel that this is the way they're "supposed" to look.

So build on my friend, & don't ever be embarrassed for building them the way "you" want to build them!

What he said! (I have no idea what I'm agreeing with. ) Good luck and have fun!

Heheh sorry 'bout that, what I said was that its fun with more people from Sweden, that it'll be fun to follow the build and that it's an awesome first car :D

Wow thanks for the support guys, this came as a big shock to me (in a good way ;)) that so many of you were interested and into box-stock. This will be WAY more fun than I ever would have expected. So without further ado:

Here's the model mocked up without the wheels, dash, windows and so on:

I was gladly surprised about the quality of this model. The only thing that is vaguely annoying me is that the rear of the hood sits a tad too high, not as much as in this picture but still higher than the body.
I mocked up the 440 6-barrel 4-speed which were a bit of disappointment, i was a poor fit with two engine halves not lining up correctly so there where a edge all around the engine but i tried my best to clean it up with my knife and fine sandpaper (1500p). You'll be the judges is succeeded:

Feel free to give me suggestions and critique on everything i do :) , It's appreciated.

The engine will be painted orange with chrome parts such as the carburetors and cam covers.

I'm going to paint the body gloss white with the classic black "stickers" (can't think of the name for it now). If I remember correctly back in 1970, these cars had the option to be ordered in white (alpine white) or light blue (corporation blue) these colors didn't cost extra in comparison to other more popular colors like: lemon twist (bright yellow), limelight green (neon green), Vitamin C (orange). If i recall correctly, all this is from memory so don't take my word for it. I was thought it would be a kind of "tribute" to those that where a bit more "normal". I have no idea if this makes sense but that's how i thought  .

I also believe that no matter what color you make these, you cant go wrong :D .

And thanks for all your nice comments, I'm humbled to say the least!

Sonny, what you called "cam covers" are actually valve covers- or, rocker covers, to some folks. The Hemi was (and still is) an overhead valve engine. And that vintage Hemi had black, wrinkle-finish textured valve covers. But your models are your world, you can do whatever you want :) . I do it all the time.

I'm also a novice...working on my second kit. One thing I'm learning is that there isn't much that can't be fixed. Once you prime the engine any irregularities will show much clearly and you can fix them before painting. Putty is really handy to have on hand for dealing with damaged or ill fitting parts.

Nice project! I have built two of these and they are good kits. I built my first one close to 30 years ago when this first came out. My only mod was changing the wheels for rallys from the TA Challenger kit. My second one I built recently and still added the rallys. I also cut the exhaust from the rear axle separating them and adding rear shocks.

Also a little piece of trivia. Did you know that the Superbird is the only Mopar that the 426 Hemi was available in that did not have any engine badges anywhere on the outside? Every 2nd gen 426 Hemi car had either 426 or a HEMI badge somewhere outside except the Superbird!

That cool! I didn't know that and I'm glad they didn't add it. Although, and i know it isn't stock, there is decals to make it look like a racecar with two of the decals being big 426's that go on each side of the hood. However I'm more interested to build it with the stock livery. :)

Yeah I really need to figure out how to hold of some of that stuff, they dont sell it my town (i don't think) and ordering can be quite costly.
