so looks like reissue of newly issued kit with addition of wild decals? that would be kool but not enough for me to buy another kit. still its a great little kit and the motor is a little jewel.

jb

Exactly. But it's also a complementary piece to the Berlin Wall Trabant 601S Art Car they did many years ago on their old tool curbside Trabbie.

Hi all - been lurking a lot, hoping to participate more.

For those who might not know this - if you build a weathered Trabant, do NOT rust the body. I know some Very Famous Modelers have done just that lately. But that's wrong.

Trabant bodies are not metal. They are made of Duraplast, a glass-reinforced plastic. Sort of like a Corvette. Which is the only comparison I know of between a Trabbi and a Vette.

The post-Fall German government discovered that the hard way, after it banned the Trabant because of outrageous pollution. (One Trabant produced about the same pollution as several large Mercedes sedans, I've heard.) Junked Trabbis couldn't be destroyed like regular cars - crushing or burning the plastic bodies created toxic gases. Finally, the Trabants were shredded and spread on icy roads in winter. Which is a pretty good diorama idea...

Motor Trend made the Trabant its Car of the Year, and I still remember a line from the review: "The engine provides no braking power. Neither do the brakes."

I visited Hungary in 2008 and saw some Trabbis still on the streets there. One is a sort of "gate guard" at Statue Park - the park/museum outside Budapest where some of the massive Communist-era statues are on display. I'll try to dig up some of my Trabbi pix and post them. I remember one with fin extensions that looked sort of like a shrunken Cadillac, if you squinted hard enough.

I did not know the Wagon is out . This release is quaint to say the least . A couple of facts about the Trabbies for those hanging on with Baited Breath for this Information ;

The Actung Babby U2 Tour lighting Platforms now reside in the Cleveland , Ohio Rock and Roll Museum and have been there since 1998 (?) . When the European Countryside was filled with non - disposable dead and unwanted Trabbies there was a major problem . Duraplast meant inability to burn , re-use the Body parts . Grinding these up and using during Snow "Events" still were unsatisfactory as the remnants still did not return to the Environment safely . So , some Free World Scientists developed a bacteria to consume this Duraplast . The World now continues with one more Communist problem solved .

Decades ago a video was available on the Internet . It was made while the Vehicle was still in Production . I've lost the Information of how and where to see this . Anyone out there willing to share this please ? Thanx ..

Duraplast wasn't glass reinforced, it was a mixture of cotton or wool mixed with a resin, both were recycled materials, while the roof panel, bootlid , bonnets, door panels and front & rear wings were made from Duraplast, the monocoque was made of steel, the rear panel and front panel, A pillars, B post and C pillar are all steels along with the inner wings, floorpan, bulkhead and door frames were all steel, so yes, you will and do see rusty Trabant's.

Bringing this thread back (sorry!), has anyone actually built the most recent Berlin Wall version of this?  I have the kit, and it appears that the entire outer part of the car is done by decals.  What I'm not clear on is ... will any of the body color show along the edges, etc.?  So, I was wondering if anyone has taken a stab at the kit yet?
