Multi-media 1/8th scale Offy engine kit

Recommended Posts

As you know TDR is a company that was formed by modelers for modelers, keeping that in mind and understanding that we do listen to your feedback........we decided to give this a try.

Many of you like the rapid prototype parts due to the built in detail, accuracy etc. that is possible. However, some folks have a real aversion to sanding and finishing out the little fiddly parts. Understandable, for sure....the time involved may not be your cup of tea.

We took our RP Offy kit, did the finish work for you on many of the parts and cast them in resin. Things like the block and head are still done RP as the sand cast finish can be used to your advantage to build a realistic looking model or are simply impossible for us to cast in resin.

For a Limited Time ONLY!!!!

Multimedia Offenhauser Engine Kit.

This new, limited time offer, kit includes the following parts:

50 finished resin parts

10 Rapid prototyped parts

As a bonus you will also receive a resin Ford 3 speed manual transmission with starter

We will only do these kits in special batch runs of 8 at a time and Tim will be taking a few to the NNL show.

So as a heads up....if you would like one, take advantage of our 20% OFF sale before they are all gone.

Below are some pics of the kit as I received it, this one will be going to Rick for his M.F. fiberglass bodied track T build.

There are pics, exploded views and plenty of info on the TDR website to help you along with assembly.

The first 3 pics are close-ups so that you can see the "cast look" finish on the block and head.....keep in mind these are much larger than the actual parts.

Below are pics of the resin parts...note that the finned parts (difficult to finish) have been done. So there you have it ....a kit that requires only minimal finishing to produce a highly detailed model.

i have to say this news is a bit of a drag. i thought so when it was initially announced and i think more so now.

as one of the first (?) to buy the original offy motor i think i should have waited to get this one with the resin parts. a lot of the necessary sanding on the original is kinda off the chain. its not bad when the finished part can have a bit of a texture. but when they are parts like those finned covers, youre looking at a lot of careful work. ive put mine aside for sometime when i got a lot of patience and/or a willingness to deal with a lot of tedium. i would have opted for resin cast parts in a second. those injectors and exhaust ports are a bear too...mine have broken apart from the strain on them from sanding because i wanted them to have a fairly smooth surface. not a big deal to fabricate a new backing plate but the resin would have avoided all the hand work that stressed them.

and now the trans is free too...kinda hurts is what it does.

so is there an "upgrade" kit available for a reasonable price? im afraid 20% off list doesnt cut it in this instance. i would think 20% of original list for the resin parts would be more appropriate, especially for purchasers of the original(s).

personally i think they should be handed out free to original purchasers.

i dont mean to whine but i held my tongue when this mixed media kit was announced...i think the time has come to speak up.

I understand William.....I'm talking with the TDR guys now, the multi-media kit is a limited edition but we will respond to you in this thread soon.

Technology advances. This years computer makes last years lame, etc. I got one of the first model sets when it came out and went through the learning experience at the time. Actually I kind of enjoyed the challenge. It was state of the art at the time. Now the art is advancing. It went through offering resin parts after an expert really worked over the original and made resin masters I guess. Now a new technique seems to be emerging with the new complete roadster they are discussing. Some parts will apparently come from a new RP technique.

I will buy into the new roadster parts when they become available and probably a year or so from now they will have achieved an even better technique and I will buy into that also. I won't look back each time. I will just feel it is pioneering.

You're right Syd, TDR is also looking at adding some metal parts for these engines in the future....they may be in complete kits or as an option, haven't decided yet. However, that's down the road and asking TDR to send them out free to buyers of the kits that were produced earlier just isn't possible. It would be like asking HP to send me a new 'puter to replace the one I bought a few months ago because they upgraded their machine.

I can tell you at this point I think the matter should have been sent directly to TDR rather than the forum but the question was asked here and TDR doesn't ignore legitimate questions or input.

jbwelda..........

I'm not going to burn up any more MCM space with this TDR matter than is needed so I'll be be as brief as possible.

Please allow me the courtesy of hearing me out before this turns into a big debate and causes ill feelings.

You bought an RP version of the TDR Offy and found that based on your particular needs that some of the parts were were difficult for you personally to finish out....that's understood.

I also have to assume that you read the ad that stated this "new" Offy was a limited edition as we have no intention of replacing the original with it at this time....they are produced in small quantities (as we've stated) and when the supply on hand runs out, won't be available again until we've completed some other projects. The RP version will stay in place in the catalog but not the "limited edition".

However, and please let me make this clear.....if you had contacted TDR directly this situation would have been resolved professionally and quickly with no fuss.

We strive to keep our customers happy and a big thanks goes out to Gregg for allowing us to show our wares here first. In an effort to put a smile on your face, here's what TDR is willing to do to achieve that end.

First of all please, either go through TDR (the addy is in my sig line)or contact me personally off-site.

Secondly if you would like to replace some of your parts with cast resin pieces we will sell them to you without having to buy another whole kit.

Understand that I'm not saying we will do one injector tube because you broke one.

Look at it from our point of view...we responded to you guys that perhaps don't have the time or patience to finish out the parts by doing all that for you with no increase in the price of the original kit and offered it limited quantities. We are not in a position to become full time resin casters.....yet!

So there you have it, we may cast some retro fit resin parts as a separate package and add it to the catalog latter on, but for the time being let's get this off the forum and TDR will do every thing we can to keep you as a customer....okay?
