Saw Rock of Ages last night...

Recommended Posts

I saw it Sat. night at the drive-in. The story was kinda predictable, but I enjoyed it. Julianne Hough, while pleasant to look at, doesn't have the chops for 80's rock and comes across more "High School Musical" than "Rock of Ages". I think Malin Akerman has a much more convincing voice for rock. The biggest surprise was Tom Cruise, who sounded like a rocker. The other male lead, Diego Boneta, has a sound more suited to the aforementioned Disney production.

This was the music that brought me, kicking and screaming, into adulthood...and I still have most of those albums. Long live vinyl!!!

I saw the Broadway play and that was awesome if for nothing else the band. The guys would go from Journey to Twisted Sister to Night Ranger so seemlessly it was amazing. And yes, it was a live band....

Wifey wants to go see. Maybe this weekend we'll check it out. We enjoyed the play, we'll see the movie.

I have to agree with you on the voices. In fact I said that to my son. I thought that, while they sang well, Hough's and Cruise's voices were too high. They didn't have that "edge" that real rockers have. And Diego was also too soft. Of course, IMHO, there is still no one who can sing like Steve Perry.

Honestly, I can't tell the difference between the new Asian guy and Steve Perry.

On another note, if you like exploding heads and squishy Freudian things, see "Prometheus."

Sounds like my kinda movie, the previews look cool ----EXCEPT for the fact that the star is someone I just can't stomach

I used to be in the same boat on him, but he surprised the heck out of me with Last Samurai and Collateral. As for his personal life - I ignore all that stuff. None of my business anyway.

I've not seen the movie, but I did see a promo that was on the Internet which had my interest. Two things......Julianne Hough and a stripper pole! What they showed was PG at best, but then again the previews on TV/on-line are FAR tamer than the movie trailers for the Seth McFarlane movie Ted

ME TOO!!! When Tom got on national TV and blasted kids and parents of kids with learning disabilities I vowed to never see another of his films. My son had learning disabilities which with professional help he overcame and is now very successful person. If you don't know what I am talking about look on YouTube....it's all there. I am unable to ignore prejudice like this....if he had said the same thing about a specific race he'd be dead now. And the film doing $14M for a major film seems like a lot think the same way.

Sorry Terry.... Journey weren't & aren't considered a hair-metal band... They're rock/pop. Not only that but they weren't as popular internationally as they were in the US. Simple. Between the 5 bands I've mentioned their total album sales are in excess of 480,000,000... That's just shy of half a billion!

Cheers Dan.

Hi Dan...

Just so ya know...I'm not some big Journey fan!

But actually Journey sold more albums worldwide than Motley Crue or Def Leppard. Crue sold 50 million, Def Leppard sold 65 Million and Journey has sold 80 million...worldwide. Semantics aside I think a lot of people consider Journey as an 80's hair band. I think that popularly, that moniker is considered by the majority of people to cover all the big bands of the 80's who played good rock music! According to what I looked up Bon Jovi has sold 130 mil, GnR sold 100 mil, Whitesnake a hundred mil, Def Leppard 65 mil and Motley Crue 50 mil. That's 445 million albums! Man that's a lot of records!!!! But even all together they pale in comparison to the Beatles or MJ or Elvis!

And btw...there are 2 Journey songs in the movie....

I was fortunate to see Journey back when they started in the late 70's. Steve Perry's voice was so clean and powerful, I was blown away.I understand he studied at Juilliard school of music. And Neal Schon on guitar was phenomenal, he started as a young protege playing with Carlos Santana. I grew up on classic rock, but Journey is still one of my all time favorite bands.

I think what I did was to describe the movie incorrectly. I mistakenly said the movie is about hair bands. I probably should have said simply 80's rock music. I mean there are songs in there by Pat Benatar, The Jefferson Starship, Night Ranger, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, REO Speedwagon, Skid Row, Quiet Riot, The Scorpions, Poison, Extreme, Warrant, and Joan Jett in addition to Journey, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard etc...
