"Exciting" new release ?

Recommended Posts

Is it just me, or do others feel that the re-release of round 2 / AMT "Hot Dogger" .... is a grand waste of plastic ? I know that everyone has different tastes & I can dig that, if this was the 70's and I was say .... 8 years old, maybe I'd be thrilled ( probably not ) . The part I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around regarding this, is looking back & seeing the previous releases of ones in this "series" , in the hobby shop bargain garbage bin, shortly after they hit the shelf, .Seriously, how much demand can there be for this goofy cartoon junk ? ........ isn't there much better choices left in AMT's past offerings, that would have appealed to a much wider consumer base ?...one would think so

Rick I too would love to be able to get my hands on some from the past that have not seen the light of day in over 30 years like the old AMT/MPC annuals of the 60s and 70s era. I will build the cartoonish kits from time to time or show rods by Monogram but my heart and main intrerest in the old annual kits rather they are curbsides or not...with the few that have been re-issued maybe there going to bring more of them back for us...we can only hope and dream of them till they do.

Different strokes for different folks, what some see as a waste of plastic cold easily be the grail of another builder. I'm sure the showrod guys are a little happy about this kit, besides it looks like it could make for some interesting kit bashing.

X 3 Scott and Mike.... kids these days ear too busy with video games to build many models. Some of the hot rod and cartoonish kits are not worth the effort to build them for me with the exception of the Monogram show rod series by Tom Daniels design. Me give me a very late 50s through 70s car/truck any day curbside or not...Id love to see these make a comeback somehow......

early to mid 70s Dodge vans window, cargo, custom

58,59,64,66-69 Bonnevilles and 70 HT

69-72 Grand Prix

65-70 Cadillac Coupe/sedan DeVilles

68,69,71,72,73 Impala/Caprice

60,65 and up Mercury Parklanes

61-70 Olds 88,Dynamic,Cutlass,F-85

60-69 Falcons

other 60s station wagons and 4 doors that have not been re-issued yet

71,72 Pontiac Sprint II

75 Firebird or TA

65-69 Lincoln HTs or sedans

67-69 T-birds

64-68 Chrysler/Dodge Manaco,Imperial,300s

61,63-69 Buick Skylark,Invicta,Electra,Wildcat

67,68 Ford Galaxie

59-63 Ford pickups

70s Chevy open road camper van/window van

Tyrone Malone Super Boss drag truck

ERTL blueprint series trucks/farm tractor kits

We can dream right?....LOL... But to each their own style of builds and kits...all can be a enjoyable build.

I get it!!!!!!

Maybe part of it is point of view.......

I grew up in So Cal 1960-1970. Dad was Racing director at Valvoline Oil. We attended many automotive events in the region. I often went with Dad to help. Valvoline always ahd a booth set up at shows with a car.....a race car most times.

But as we got in early and stayed after close I got to see behind the scenes. I was always drawn to the wild 'show rods' of the day. I even got to sit in a few......like Boot Hill Express.

So these wild kinda unreal show rods appeal to me greatly. And for a number reasons......nostalgia one but also as a kit collector. It's not for all I agree....but that's why they make so many different kits each year. The coming 29 Ford from Revell does less for me than Lil Hot Dogger does. We have a number of 29 Ford kits.

If you don't like a kit....pass it by. Being negative in a hobby that has shrunk so much it should be long gone offers no positive effect. R2, Revell and Moebius are doing GREAT things and trying their best to pump exciting things into the hobby....and grow it if we can. Overall....let's look at all the positive going on.......and more on the way. Be thankful for the variety.

I agree Dave...there is a lot to be happy about over the last few years in re-issued kits and all new ones. It all basically boils down to what a builder likes in the end...me if I find it interesting or I am bored Ill build anything. Me I grew up in the 60s and 70s era...to me those are the hey days of models and promos just because I like them so much both for their subjects and style of kit. It never bothered me if a kit was a curbside or full detailed glue kit they all build up into nice models. I am just happy they are listening to us and trying to bring the ones we all want back for us all.

I don't understand the attraction either. Maybe nostalgia, but i never built cartoon cars even when I was younger.

+1 on all this.

But if selling these cartoons turns a profit that ends up financing the restoration of better, cooler, more important old tools, hey, I'm all for it.

Well, if they've got the tooling in good shape lying around just getting rustier and dustier, running off one run of kits to test the waters for a potential market for others in the series makes pretty good business sense.

IF it's a decent seller, more in the line can be put out. IF it's a flop, the expenditure can be written off.

WAY cheaper to test-run one of these old tools that probably didn't get too many runs in the first place than to restore the tooling for something lots of US might want.

Well said Bill.

I get it. Round 2 has a lot of show car molds since those were unlikely to be updated to next year's annual. These models represent someone's memory from their childhood and will make some folks happy. For instance, I have fond memories of building the Lil Stogie when I was a kid. I always had one eye open for an example of the kit to complete my memory collection. The kit was quite elusive and I passed on examples that were over $100. I never thought it would be reissued, but there it was! So I was happy to grab up a few copies!

The guys running Round 2 are on top of their game, and know model cars better than any previous owner of the tools. It's a known fact that show cars don't sell as well as something more mainstream. They know the number they can sell of a show car, so they no doubt will distribute an appropriate number of kits.

I guess when I do the odd showrod, I just prefer the more accurate replicas, The Boothill, Lil Coffin, Mysterion, that sort of thing. I just find this Hot Doggy thing a little childish .... variety is fine, but I just can't imagine any huge demand for this, if it does flop ; how does that promote the hobby in a positive way ? I think honest discussion regarding kit offerings is healthy for the hobby, I respect your opinion;I don't agree; but I do respect it.

I'll be getting one. I think those kind of kits are just fun. A nice break from a more "serious" project. After all, isn't a hobby supposed to be fun?

If you don't like the subject, don't buy it. That simple. Most of us aren't interested in figure kits , Gundams and the like but we don't go on a car forum and complain about whatever company making them shouldn't be doing it. Why should a fantasy showrod like this be any different because it has 4 wheels and an engine?

I have no interest in building a semi truck or a rail dragster but I certainly won't complain about the companys making them.

This is the one I'm waiting for. I think I'll have a long wait.

That kit is in the 'Depth Charger' tooling....so I'll bet it's still around (as is Koo Koo Kar) but these kits are not huge sellers....so you can look for one or two a year. So maybe a year or two down the road.......I do like this one.....lucky to have it in the collection.
