New Project: Hasegawa Jaguar XJ-S H.E. TWR

well while the season is working its way around to good painting weather to shoot the Wild Dream, I decided to move on to something thats been in my "to do" pile for quite awhile now: a kind of obscure Hasagawa kit of a Jaguar XJ-S HE works car. This model is really very nice looking and I was impressed from the first i opened the box: photo etch details, piping for brake ducting, excellent looking body and parts castings, what turned out to be very excellent fit and finish of the body kit and the parts count in general. oh yeah did I mention this comes with full motor detail? Pretty cool!

All I've done so far beyond fondle the plastic is to prep the chassis for paint, which also included some filling and drilling of holes per instruction sheet, and do some test fitting of body parts etc.

The detail level of this kit appears pretty impressive as well: the interior is a tub stripped of luxuries with recarro seat and fuel cell and full cage roll bar. The chassis depicts detail of unknown accuracy but with some very busy looking race suspension going on. should come up nice with some paint and care.

anyway heres some photos and be sure to follow along as I progress (or not, as the case may be)...the paint is going to be the challenge for me with the two tone bit but I am praying to the gods of tamiya for help on the way!

Has anyone here ever built this model? Any hints or tips or photos?

the box top:

the body from front, note how well the panel lines line up on the separate front clip/ground effects:

<a href="http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=goodbodyfront.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3499/goodbodyfront.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

and from the rear, sorry about the less than pro quality photos:

heres the photoetch fret, pretty darn complete for not having to "inch up" (read: "bucks up")

<a href="http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image=photoetch.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/786/photoetch.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

heres one of the engine sprues, note the hairy exhaust system:

<a href="http://img25.imageshack.us/my.php?image=motorsprue.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4282/motorsprue.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

some hop up parts included:

<a href="http://img26.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hopupsprue.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/7092/hopupsprue.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

some assorted cool stuff: orange ducting hose, wheels, decal sheet and photo etch

<a href="http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=coolparts.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1040/coolparts.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

close up of really nice slotted Jaguar works rims:

finally chassis and parts prepped and ready for DP-40 simulation color:

The street versions weren't too bad they didn't have too many problems but the racing ones were pretty cool. I like this one. This ought to turn out good, after you fondle all the plastic. ;)

I forget which one Jeremy Clarkson hates, that they filled it with water ;)

thanks for looking folks; i will post more as the slow but not so sure progress, well, progresses.

>Is this a current release or is it discontinued?

its certainly not a current release but i am not sure how available it is these days. i dont recall where i got this kit but it was a good few years ago, if memory serves i may have picked it up at the NNL West swap meet 10 years or so ago. I have not seen another since that i know of. i do believe ive seen a stock version but as noted that aint much to write home about; this racing variant is the one that got my attention.

chassis and other parts painted and drying...

Jaguar V12 motor parts separated and partially cleaned up. this is at least a 24 part engine assembly!

motorparts.jpg

dig those chrome plated wiring and fuel harnesses! look closely at the small one and you will see some substantial cleanup to do!

a little progress to report: been cleaning up suspension and motor parts and doing some preliminary metalizing of various components, getting ready to detail paint suspension parts and assemble then tackle the interior and start in on the paint...

probably not much interesting in the photos at this stage but they should get better from here on out as the individual assemblies come together:

theres the bad jaguar v12 in the background with its ignition wires sticking out of the distributor:

again, many thanks for looking!

I can't wait to see this one come together, Bill!!

I had that kit a long time ago, (and may even still have it somewhere... ).

Keep us posted on your progress!!

Later,

You probably sold this very kit to Bill at an NNL West 10 or so years ago... ;)

Looking great so far Bill, I too have been intriged by this kit...but never picked one up

you know i may very well have bought this kit at NNL a number of years ago; i cant remember exactly where i got it but its the only one i had seen. in that case, thanks, raul!

im going to try to finish up the motor and take some pics tonite.

i do have to say you have to pay *real* close attention to the instrux, especially the sort of hidden directions to fill or open up holes in the body. and on the chassis even though i tried my best, one hole got left open, it was probably to hold the stock exhaust system. went back and looked at instrux again, its not noted at all. you have to remove 5 or 6 objects that are molded into the body and some other modifications like two big holes in the trunk lid, to fit what appear to be fuel cell filler caps.

anyway pics soon!

ok heres some photos of the motor, just got the wiring done and the injection harness on, still has a few more parts to be added, in the next photo:

engine, i built the distributor with aluminum tubing and epoxy, everything else is out of box:

some bits ready to put on the block:

finishedbits.jpg

wheels and tyres, yeah i think the decals are on upside down :(

wheelsandtires.jpg

heres a shot of the rear suspension:

rearsuspensionfromabove.jpg

and heres the notorious ejector pin marks coming back to haunt me!

ejectormarkscloseup.jpg

thats about it for now, im also getting the body prepped for the two tone body (a big deal for me I am afraid) and the interior is ready to get put together and detailed, more pics to come!

thanks for looking!

thanks for looking folks!

heres a quick update set of photos of the motor completed, save for positioning the exhaust pipes. i think i will have more luck doing it in situ than as the instrux indicate beforehand.

niceallgearfromleftfron.jpg

niceallgearfromtopback.jpg

niceallgearfromtopright.jpg

oilpanandbottomdetail.jpg

that slot in the bottom plate engages into a tab on the top of the front suspension crossbeam.

couple immediate problems: one being the seam in the radiator pipe that i neglected to see until i took the photo a few minutes ago ;) once again, and also that stupid piece coming out of the front plate of the engine was supposed to hold a pulley with the stock belt arrangement. well guess what, with all the telling you to fill this and drill that, the instrux neglected to mention removing it so now its there. when i was assembling it i figured something fit on there. wrong again.

its gonna be a bear to get a razor saw in there now. maybe a dremel with the circular buzz saw blade will get it. or of course there always the sprue cutters and dealing with the cleanup afterwards.

or i could paint it flat black and pretend it is not there. dunno. ;)

That's a beautiful looking engine! ;)

Not sure exactly what part on front of engine you mean, but a buzz saw that close would make me nervous. I'd bet the sprue cutters and some paint will camouflage it from everyone ... especially once it's in the car. Would have to be one of those deep dark recesses it's in.

That engine looks so good, I wouldn't temp fate by messing around and trying to remove whatever it is that shouldn't be there.

Paint it flat black and ignore it. As said, once the model is finished and the engine is in place, you'll never notice that anything isn't as it should be. Great work so far... ;)

thanks for the encouragement folks, thats exactly what i did, just snipped it off and did the tip in silver from a silver sharpie. dont even notice it! now trying to make that top pulley look better!

thats the problem with macro lenses!
