Yes, Those are the AMT Hollow Goodyears.
Original Boxart showed BF Goodrich T/A's on the Actual car though.
MPC's BFG's are a little smaller in diameter, so I shaved the letters off mine
I also Narrowed them one tread row.
I never could see why AMTY put 2 Amber flasher/rotators on the lower grill/bumper,
I only ever see the one double wide on the left.

Yes... Round 2 doesn't remove their sidewall lettering.

I've got the original '89 version of the kit, now sporting a widened El Camino roof. It was going to be a hauler for a Revell Midget (as the cargo bed has room to spare), but I overlooked the one minor detail of the Midget being too wide to fit through the tailgate. Oh well...

I picked up my two yesterday and I'm trying to decide if I want to build the first one as an ambulance or a hearse. A hearse would require an extensive modification of the rear area of the interior. An ambulance would require fewer interior mods, but I'd have to scratch-build the emergency lights.

Either way, what fun!

You could largely do it with what's included in the kit. There are some period correct lights hidden among the more modern lights.

Here is a tutorial for making a Federal Beacon Ray (rotating light) from an automotive bulb. I've seen one of Dave's beacon rays using this technique and they are spectacular, way better than anything I've seen in plastic or resin.

I went to the trouble of back-dating one of these to the original.
Then of course Polar Lights came out with their kit.
The P-L kit appears to be based off the same masters as the AMT 1A kit.
Though the rear axle is too far back in the opening. Also the separate dark tint window section is wrong.
Both movies had a clear stripe in the side & rear hatch/door window with the top & bottom areas dark.
it is not easy to see in my built 1A above. * One side is painted with window tint, the other is tint film.
I could not get the stuff to spray/settle well. It ran terribly.
It took 2 layers of film to match the Testor's spray!!

That's a very useful tutorial, thanks for the link. I'll also take a closer look at the kit for those throwbacks you mentioned.

The 4 Corner Spot lights that mount to the rooftop equipment rack are era correct for a stock Ambulance.

The A pillar spotlight will need to be relocated. Most on vehicles of this era were Fender mounted.
The are went through the fender to the dash.

The picture of my built above shows the modified mount but may not be sharp/large enough.
I need to foil it though.

The Monogram grille/bumper fits pretty well- about all you need to do is put a shim under the bottom of the hood and blend it in.

you can open up the monogram caddy grille by grinding the back side of it.

also the rear of Ecto-1, since there's talk of the bumper

Biggest improvement you can make (appearance-wise) to this kit is to install the grille/bumper from a Monogram '59.


The white strip visible between the bottom edge of the hood and the top of the grille will fill in the gap resulting from using the Monogram grille on the AMT body.



The blacked-out area behind the headlight bezels shouldn't be kept chrome- that's a common area overlooked by most people who build '59 Caddy kits. Here's how it looks before the remaining chrome is masked off, and the area is blended into the fender.

Both AMT & Monogram would have been better off casting the Headlight bezels
as separate parts, thus allowing the fender to extend to its correct location.
The Gunze 1/32 scale 59 Eldo has the headlight bezels cast with the body,
With the dividing line in the correct location leaving the body color band separating
the grill from the headlights.

That's one area I didn't fix on this one- for me, the area just behind the headlights on the fenders was the most distracting feature.

Speaking of hearses, IIRC at one time a resin caster (maybe Jimmy Flintstone?) did a hearse body for this kit.

I think the JF bodies are for the Polar Lights kits, but I have seen a few hearse bodies for this kit.

It will likely fit both fairly equally, But I bet it Was for this one.
I seem to remember it being done Before P-L did their version

I believe it to be a Superior Crown

Ive got the amt release coming in the mail dont know anything about the kit but its gonna make a great hearse. Any pros and cons about the kit would be appreciated thanks ryan

Well, its a very basic curbside kit, all the chassis is one piece, the interior is pretty basic , its not a bad kit, but its not a great kit either

The "glass" is very thick and has a horizontal strip moulded into the side & rear windows (representing the strip of tint they fitted to ambulances).

A lot of shaving & filling is required to remove the mountings for the ghostbusting gear.

It won't fit straight onto a Revellogram '59 Caddy chassis either.
