As a former owner of both a Rabbit and Scirrocco I would love to see these reissued as well. I did take a stab at building a copy of my Rabbit but I got overambitious with it and now it sits in carnage in its box. :D

Your Rabbits looks fantastic, Steve. Really makes me wish I hadn't butchered mine. Thankfully I am a little wiser about picking my battles now.

Oh, and the Omni engine...VW actually used them in 1981 or 82, so it's a kosher swap. The distributor should be located just south of the 2-3 spark plugs, center of the block and the clutch cable would go where you have it now...but I think it can be forgiven if you leave it like that because it's just so dang snazzy. :P

The Omni kit I pulled the engine from was an '80 MPC 024. The kit has the base engine in it which is a VW 1.7 litre. It's the same engine as in the '78 base model Rabbit I used to have.

I didn't know VW ever used the Chrysler engine.

Here's a couple pics of the engine I'm building. It's the first year for the fuel injection instead of a carb. about 1978.

Ah, gotcha. Yep that works too then. I also see that I was off on the clutch cable location. I guess it has been 20 years since I drove that car. The memory has faded a bit.

Cool Steve!

Looking forward to seeing it completed B)

I've got two of these I plan on combining into a Rabbit pickup like I owned many years ago...made in the now-defunct New Stanton, PA plant :(

I always heard it refered to as "The Westmoreland Plant", so after reading "New Stanton plant," I had to Google it. I see they are one in the same. My former '89 16v GTI was built in Mexico, though. Ole!

Love '70s cars, and maybe especially the VW's. Might be because my parents had a '74 Passat(Dasher) Wagon. My self bought a '76 Audi 80 in 1987. A car I wish I never sold.

Love Your build. The color is awsome, and that foiling is impeccable.

Commuter cars! Great gas mileage but had their own little mechanical issues that could be rather annoying and costly!
The diesel could get close to 50mpg on a long interstate highway run!
We pulled one in off the inyerstate that broke a timing belt which would result in a trashed head (diesel issue only) we delivered it to the owner. On the drive from The Marion IL. area to the North side of Atlanta GA. I averaged 52 mpg!

The Omni/Horizon actually used several different engines in it's life span but ended up with the VW engine.
The VW Rabbit always had a VW engine.

GTI Commercial:

This, and watch both versions of The Italian Job. Same thing applies.
I had about 5 hours of flight time between my VW Squareback and Beetle, They are RWD, but about as big, less so in my Tercel cause it's not as fast.

This might be a dumb question, but are the Rabbit & Scirocco hard to find kits? I know I have at least one of each stashed away....

Very nice work on the Rabbit. The interior pattern looks great.

I would also like to see the VW kits reissed. I a had a 1/1 Scirocco & built the kit. That was one hot little car.

Not terribly hard to find John but they were only released once. No harder to find than a mid-'70's issue of any other kit

Including this one I got as a built up, I have 4 now and could have bought a few more if I had wanted over the last few years.
