I'm doing a project with a couple of big turbos which need external wastegates... but I don't know how to even start to make one. If you have any ideas, please lemme know!

I have never tried to make one, but I would suggest doing a image search and decide what brand/style you are wanting to emmulate.
Once you have established that, study the basic shape and take a trip tp Michael's, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabrics, a bead store and see if you can find a bead that has the same basic shape and modify it as needed.

The flanges and whatnot could be scratched with sheet styrene.

Just a thought

My self, I would get together all your oil filters from your parts box and look for the biggest pair, start with that cut them down and build some flanges. If it was for a 1/24 scale that is. I'm sure you could get really into it with some rod an sheet styrene if it ws a bigger scale.
