Actually, the VIN does identify V8 cars. The number will start with a "V" on V8 cars.
Here's the Factory ID guide showing how the read the VIN (originally calles Serial Number)

Also, weren't the V emblems deleted on the "sixes"?
I know that on the "Fuelies" they were plated in the gold color.

Anyone know how this compares with the AMT '53 Corvette (other than 1/25 vs 1/24)? I'm building the AMT kit now and it is a nice kit, but I have ideas for another '53 Corvette. Since they are re-issuing the kit and the AMT is fairly easy to find on Ebay I have options.

Wagon needs the hood, tires & hubcaps from El Camino to be stock!!

I honestly don't understand Revell wasting time on the SSR kit. They didn't sell well in the real world and I have yet to hear of anyone say they wanted another model of it. I've also never seen one being displayed at any model shows. Maybe it's just me. I think they should have put their time into something else.

I would assume it's just a straight reissue, so it's a minimal investment..

I would not really look at the real one, but it Was a Pace car for the Indy 500,

so I Do want a kit to build as such!!

How about the PT Cruiser Snap kit come out in a couple of months. Not sure what they were thinking with either of these kits.
