1929 ford roadster pick-up ratrod

Recommended Posts

this one was actually my first ever plastic modelkit and like my coupe i desided to redo this one after a while .

started like this back then >

and it ended up like this

2 weeks ago i decided to redo a ford coupe to use in my garage dio project and after completing that one i desided last week i wanted to redo the pick up also..

sure i could have kept it as my forst plastic build kit ever but i'm not that sentimental :)

so i started to break it apart

2012-10-07163153.jpg

getting some idea's flowing

2012-10-071737491.jpg

and i desided not to make a whole new frame but use the existing one cut of the fenders that where one piece with the frame

reason most is hidden , its a fairly quick rebuild and it will be rusted .

also i wanted a sort if flimsy looking frame ..

actually used parts of a incomplete vw beetle kit for this

then weathered the engine

2012-10-10193317.jpg

the seat / bench i made cracks in that like the leather had dry cracks and washed it with acrylic paint

also desided to use these wheels to compensate for the rust a bit

2012-10-11173142.jpg

2012-10-11173200.jpg

aged the wood in the bed

2012-10-11173308.jpg

did the rear wheels

2012-10-12180727.jpg

and started the dash and window frame (just first set up)

this is where i'm at right now , now i need to make some cool details , add stacks and carbs on the engine and some more nice detailing maybe

I like it, it's looking good.

thnx :) , just posted the past pics to where i'm at atm

thnx guys

very cool!

i never thought of using saw dust for texture, ive been using baking soda and you have to be careful with it because if you dont seal it good enuff, it will turn white again!

nice work

bryan

its like finedust i dont know if you call it the same but its sawdust from mdf wood (the smooth pressen stuff) , waight i googled it and its just short for

Medium Density Fiberboard so i'm sure you know what i mean :)

i used it as base for my diorama and i saw the dust lying there and saved it in a container because its superfine stuf and i thought i can use that as dust or as stuff they trow on oilspils in garages .

when i was doing this ford i saw the jar with dust and got the idea to use it as texture , it actually is perfect scale wise..

first i tried wood glue and dust over it and then acrylic paint with the brush ..

but soon i tried just a layer of acrylic paint (waterbased) and just trow some sawdust on it , then paint over it right away .. then after drying some darker stuff and its like you get depth .. i could have made tiny holes even like its rusted through ..

but now it does not come of even when i wrub it with my finger , ist just enclosed in the paint

@ MCM Ohana , thnx , still learning new stuff , due to the diorama and the fact i tried a lot of stuff there i got the idea to turn my rods into weathered models ..

tbh i think its so much more fun and you can get much more realism with weathering , its like i found my calling lol :)

after looking here and posting some of my stuff i made carbs on the engine today and gave them the same weathering as the rest of the engine

mounted the windowframe and dash , the dash got a orange lightbulb in the middle , a small speedo en 2 pinstripes

today i moved everything from my workshed into my house , its getting too cold there , everything is cold and eventhough i could place a heater it will never become like real comftable in the shed ..

so for the winter i'm building in my house :)

started with some lighthousings out of my partsbox , like little bullet shaped ones and glued some lenses on them

then fixed them under the bed

30345_204986829634235_1423359595_n.jpg

and gave the houses the same rust threatment as the rest to make it beld in and not stick out so much under there

on this picture you see the carbs on top of the engine , need some fuel lines en other detaling

598739_204986972967554_296002905_n.jpg

desided to place the window a tad openen like a safariwindow and made the glass slightly dirty , also drybrushed the tryes slightly

and make then less static (i already sanded the tyres before placing them)

started on the grille and used a ruined ford grille from the coupe kit .

i cut out the closed middle section so i only had the edge

932_205044639628454_1240610261_n.jpg

cleaned up the edges a bit

253132_205044676295117_82706821_n.jpg

luckely i could salvage this piece of radiator also

540960_205044726295112_529810021_n.jpg

563984_205044706295114_781643816_n.jpg

then painted this inside black , bitrough but later on you hardly see this , the black is only to give darkness and depth when i make a grille in front

i also made a bottom piece from scrap plastics so the grille is closed again

580166_205044762961775_1402362699_n.jpg

dryfitting loose in front to see how it looks

545784_205044802961771_178908752_n.jpg

then made a top on the carbs

73949_205044849628433_261699094_n.jpg

and tried some headlights from the spare kit .. hmm bit big , the bar is cool with the v8 logo in the middle , maybe fit smaller headlights on that ?

i hope tomorrow i think hmm cool otherwise its back to the "drawing board"

crappy evening pics

545805_205073322958919_324645062_n.jpg

made the headlights a bit yellow , i always like that on rough cars on the pic they look more yellow then irl

554149_205073349625583_1693851521_n.jpg

thnx a lot , i was affraid it was too much .. in a way maybe it is but i just wanted to make a full rough rust colored rod ounce :)

def. not going to do this a lot , maybe a bit of rust here and there :)

thnx and yes i saw a guy who made leafsprings like that , very cool :)

here is a loose testfit of the grille , just sitting loose in front of the car will sit a tad higher (not much :) )

400939_205750226224562_619972282_n.jpg

the stuff on the rim whats on the shiny ring needs to be toned down still , thats not staying like that

also will ad a pinstripe like on the dash on the top of the grille ...
