Why couldnt you just clear coat it.

 

I fully intend to. The '66 will be built just as it is and I will shine it up. Eventually. It's not perfect, but it sure is different. And that's what I'm all about.

Post it up Jim, as long as we're not breaking any rules doing so.

On you tube they have done swirl paint jobs on guitars, you have water with borax powder mixed, a few drops of whatever color combination you wish of

paint, immerse the object into the paint, turning and adhering the paint the way you wish, them skim the rest of the paint off the water and no more paint will spoil your first effect. here is another guy that uses humbrol paints on a bass guitar

Thanks for the input guys. I'm stoked to try it again now. I will do it without from the top down into the water like Jim described earlier and I will swirl the paint, before I start spraying into the water.

Hope you mean swirl the water, Rob.  I've used Testors enamels over the water and trying to stir the paint when it's on top of the water will cause the paint to stick to whatever you try stirring it with.

Yeah I found that out too Jim.

Ha, ha.  No fun was it?  Using a large stir stick after plunging the body in will get rid of the paint residue.  DO NOT PULL THE BODY OUT UNTIL THE REST OF THE PAINT HAS BEEN REMOVED!!  Been there.  Done that and had to strip the paint.  Here's one I did years ago.

 I can remember that Car model article from back in the day though my copy of the mag has long gone.

 

This is a link to a Hydrographics kit. It uses a similar technique and while it may or may not suitable for our models  the range of patterns available and the parts that can be covered is something I found interesting.

 

The instructional video may hold some tips that can be of use to us.

wow this thread is full of awesome I to wanna jump on the wagon and attempt this.  Has anyone tried thus far since posting?

I have not. The wagon body went back into the box for later. It is on my list of things to do though.
