Well, of course they are! Because she's the only woman to qualify, which makes it a bigger news story than if a male driver won the pole, which would not have been a news story at all!

It's February, very little of any importance is going  in any other sports and Nascar's biggest race is coming up and we get a week to talk about who's on the pole.  It's always a news story, regardless of who it is.  It's not usually a front page or network nightly news worthy story, though.

If you look back over the history of the Daytona 500, there haven't been very many chumps to sit on the pole (Loy Allen, David Green, and David Gilliland are the most recent ones that come to mind, and those 3 all "paid their dues" in lower levels of closed-wheel racing and none of them has done much in the top level).

David Gilliland is a case of should of stayed in the Busch series at that time, he came to the Cup level way to soon, even driving good race cars , he still could not do anything, and that would be why he is driving for a B/C level Cup team

Everyone's entitled to their opinions either for or against. With this post I've just killed my horse, no sense in beating the poor animal anymore.

Would Danica be where she is if she did not have Go Daddy writing the checks?,  she moved to NASCAR because NASCAR is bigger and have better exposure then the IRL, and that is good for Go Daddy,  I believe that Go Daddy was behind getting Danica move to NASCAR, and not because it was something she wanted to do.

Dnaica is more of a marketing tool then a race car driver, again, not taking anything away from her, but it is what it is, NASCAR has become a pay to drive series in many case's , and Danica is paying to be in her ride.  Stewart Haas racing only gave Danica her ride because Go Daddy is paying for it.

That pretty much describes every driver since the early 60's. Not one driver would be in a car unless there was a sponsor paying for it. Every team owner takes money from sponsors to put drivers in cars. That's how it is.

Yes there has been someone who HAS been in a race car at speed on a race track.  But I won't contribute anything intelligent cause you monkeys will just fling your poo at me.  Now get out of that race car and hang onto a motorcycle at speed on a race track and we'll see where the real men are.

Well, if you have anything truly intelligent to contribute, you wouldn't be afraid of a little monkey poo, especially with your manly motorcycle skills behind you.

Yep, we need a sarcasm font...

Look how well the hype over Danica is working. Even here on little 'ol MCM forum....137 comments on 7 pages now on this subject!  If it's generating this much comment here imagine what it's doing in the rest of the NASCAR world!  You know what they say in the advertising world....any publicity is good!

I just read the entire topic and I have learned one thing from reading all of the posts. Danica should have stayed in the kitchen and let the men folk do the driving.

One thing is all you've learned?  Wow... ah, but you're from Michigan.  Never mind.

Not that I have anything against MI- it was "home" for just about one year, thanks to Uncle Sam.

Nobody pays big money for no-talent driver sponsorship. Racing now is more 'business' than ever in history, and sponsors want their logos to be seen out front, where the cameras are following the leaders, and in the winners circle. Back in the pack doesn't rate. They put lotsa bucks in to back potential winners. Danica is a talented and skilled driver, maybe not the best every day (and NOBODY is), but she's still got what it takes. It helps that she's also a very attactive woman, and that coupled with her ability got her sponsorship. But if she was slow and a hazard, she'd already be gone.

Why not just give the woman the credit she deserves ?  Can anyone here do better ??

Lets see here: 2 1/2 miles in 45+ seconds, 195+ mph. Nah..that don't take no talent. RIGHT!
I am a Danica fan. Have been since her Indy Car days.
I think I read where she has had only 11 Sprint cup starts. She did Nationwide full time last year and some Sprintcup. Played a little the year before.
She is still a rookie guys. She and her boyfriend, Ricky Stenhouse, will both be fighting for "ROOKIE OF THE YEAR".
I don't think many of her wrecks were her fault.
She is good. Anyone that can qualify for a Nascar race is "GOOD". No, she ain't great, not yet. Only time will tell.

But, I do hate all the hype. On media day, before qaulifing, she had a 24 minute interview with the press, just like the other drivers. She spent 13 minutes answering questions about her and her her boyfriend.
Blame the press. She is just trying race.
I say give her some time and see how she does in the big show.
Of course the big money helps as well as her looks. I wonder what her net worth is?

Thank you. She deserves the credit, absolutely. Calls of "no-talent" are the very worst kind of sour grapes.

She won the pole, that's a major accomplishment for anyone. I'm happy for her, she won the pole fair and square by being faster than everyone else. Ignoring the media aspect of her coverage, why anyone would get bent out of shape over attention for winning the pole is beyond me. it's legitimately major news.

Add me to the chorus of "You go girl."

Okay, so she has been holding the pole position on here pretty much for 3 days now so, I think maybe there is just something about the green car, maybe we all like that color?   I do have a confession to make, a while ago I had  the TV on Speed channel while practice was going on.  I was just getting ready to turn it off when I saw the green car go by , so I left it on, see this is how it works?  I think if she falls off the page here you can probably go flip your TV on and figure out why no one is on here talking about her at the moment.  I don't remember this kind of reaction to Janet Guthrie when she ran at Indy years ago or Sarah Fisher for that matter.

Well firstly, certainly the media is a very different creature today than it was in 1977 when Guthrie ran her first 500. I don't think such a comparison is valid at all as the contexts are so different.

Secondly, we heard a lot about Sarah Fisher when she was running 500s.

I think it's pretty ridiculous to ascribe looking at Danica's accomplishment as due to her driving a green car.

Whoops!  Don't get me wrong, I like all of these women and they all deserve a lot of credit for their driving talents.  I think Danica has the best opportunity going for her of any woman so far.  I would love to see her succeed in this sport. It takes way more talent then anyone is ever given to drive one of these cars in my opinion.  Oh, and what I was saying about the green car was meant to be funny, guess I should have added one of these.

Danica in NHRA? The Force girls would beat her hands down.

Danica the first female to earn a pole in NASCAR? I thought the Busch series was part of NASCAR… So I don’t think that is accurate.

Fairness in NASCAR? I’m not saying she did not earn the pole fairly, but when NASCAR has a “Golden Child” like she is and Dale Jr. was for example, the tech inspections sure seem tend to overlook some things.

Who remembers the restrictor plate race (only one????) where Jr. was able to trounce the competition and come from the rear into the lead in three laps where no other car could get the speed up? It looked fake (for a reason) and he still got a pass.

NASCAR and wrestling have a lot in common. It’s why I lost interest in NASCAR (and never cared for wrestling).
