Does the mandate apply to trucks too?
It's called CAFE or Corporate Average Fuel Economy. It's the mpg ratings the manufactuers line up has to average if you factor in all models they produce.
Colaborating between manufacters is nothing new. Mopar and GM co designed and used a few different manual transmissions - the NV5600 6 speed truck trans and a NV4500 5 speed truck trans.
Mopar came out with an 8 speed automatic in Caravan body styles in 2008 . All they did was replace the output shaft with multiple planetary gear sets to bump output shaft speed up ,thus lowering engine RPM at the same vehicle speed. It had some issues the 1st couple years but I think they got the bugs out of it now.
