is it ok to spray directly onto plastic or have a primer coat?

All paint likes a primer coat. It helps it to stick to the surface better. I've had brush paint on bare plastic just flake off. Now I primer everything, including parts I brush paint.

No, you do not have to ,  you will get better results if you do.
