MENG 1/35th BMPT "Terminator" WIP 9-24-14

24 September 2014 - 04:34 PM

Moved into a new apartment a few weeks ago, got my workbench up and running and dug into this really cool new kit from Meng. Might be the best kit I've ever worked on, fit was excellent, engineering was nice, no real snags along the way (that weren't my doing).

I didn't take that many pics along the way during construction since it's mostly out-of-the-box, but I will try to take some as I go through the painting and weathering process.

I'm trying out some primer from the fairly new comapny Ammo of Mig Jimenez.  I've been a little leery of acrylic primers before, I tried the Vallejo primer when it first came out and had some issues with it.  This stuff is awesome.  Goes on smooth, adheres to plastic very well.  No smell whatsoever.  I'll be using Ammo's new Modern Russian paint set on this too, I'm looking forward to using them, I hope they're as good as the primer!

Camaro ZL1 Carbon

09 September 2014 - 11:34 AM

So, I moved into a new apartment a few days ago after the wife and I separated (don't feel sorry for me, we didn't have kids, didn't own a house, and it has been an amicable separation). I've probably gotten more modeling done in the last 5 days than I have in the last 5 years!  I built a Gundam, have a tank model almost rady to paint, and have been #$@ing around with the new Revell pre-painted 2013 Camaro ZL1 that is just now starting to hit store shelves.  You can read my review thread here: http://www.modelcars...topic=92994&hl=

I stripped the paint (came off easy with 91% alcohol) and the chrome wheels (came off easy with yellow-cap oven cleaner) and did a quick mockup for the camera (I apologize for the front wheel not being centered, the body had shifted on the frame):

My intention is to do it as the ZL1 Carbon concept, with black wheels and raw carbon fiber accents on the hood and spoiler.  I used to be quite good at carbon fiber decaling, I hope I haven't lost my touch! Here's the real thing:

Yeah, I know it's one of those typical "mockup-with-wheels-and-tires" posts on MCM, but stay tuned - I plan on actually doing something with this one!

What was the first song about cars?

06 September 2014 - 07:54 AM

The poll from the other day about the hot rod songs got me thinking - What was the first "pop" song written about cars?  I mentioned Ike Turner and Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" from 1951, which was recorded by Sam Phillips before he started Sun Records and I've heard several sources claim that this song and the others from that recording session were the original Rock 'n Roll songs.

Then there's legendary bluesman Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues" from 1936, obviously the Terraplane in the song is a metaphor for Johnson's old lady, so it really isn't about cars, exactly...

So what is the orginal song about cars?  Can anybody come up with anything older than these 2?

How do you embed YouTube videos here?  I thought there was a button?

New Revell 1/25 2013 Camaro ZL-1 (pre-painted)

26 August 2014 - 03:48 AM

Picked one of these up yesterday, I'll try to take some photos later today, surprised no one has started a thread on it yet.

Looks nice, like a hybrid between a snap kit and a full-detail glue kit.  Reminds me a lot of the old AMT "Craftsman" series which were promo-style chassis but with engine bay.  The Inferno Orange metallic paint is really well done, but is let down by the mold lines which were not removed from the body before painting.  Serious modelers will no doubt want to strip and clean up the mold lines and repaint them (and it's possible Revell will offer these unpainted in the future).  For the money (less than a standard Revell full-detail kit) I think these are very well done.  The windows have the black borders prepainted as well.  The chassis and interior parts are molded in very dark grey and a metallic black.

Highly recommended to beginners and to advanced modelers who will strip and clean up the body casting.

Revell 4th Quarter new kit announcements

24 July 2014 - 03:38 AM

Yet again, Tower Hobbies has posted information on upcoming new Revell kits before any official announcement from Revell.  Great internal communication inside the Hobbico empire!

Right now I don't have any more info than what can be gleaned from the Tower listings, anything in parentheses are my additional thoughts.

1/25 Starsky & Hutch Torino (wha?!?  Talk about coming outta left field! By price appears to be a full-detail kit)

Tommy Ivo Showboat (reissue I'm sure)

2014 Mustang GT (nice that the last of that generation won't be over looked, I've gotten a lot of requests and folks asking if it would be done.  By the price looks like it'll be one of the new pre-paints)

Acura Integra (assuming reissue of the Tuner series kit)

1/24 Porsche 911 (assuming a Monogram reissue, but who knows?)

1/24 VW Rabbit (RoG rebox?)

1/24 1955 Ford Panel truck (judging by the scale, I'm assuming a modified version of the pickup - reissue, forgot that it exists)

Ed Roth Surfite

2014 Corvette Stingray (by price point looks to be pre-paint)

2013 Camaro ZL1 and Challenger SRT 8 (different numbers from prepaints already announced, assuming these are different colors or possibly unpainted versions)

Matt and Debbie Hay's Thunderbird Pro Street (reissue)

Snap kits:

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (assuming modified from glue kit)

1/25 Ford Police Car (assuming the new Taurus-based Interceptor)

2014 Corvette Stingray

Different #'s and cheaper price 2015 Mustang and Audi R8 (assuming these are clamshell packaged versions of the boxed kits, the clamshells usually run cheaper than boxed kits)

Well, that's what I came up with, I'd expect Revell to post something on their Facebook page over the next week or so with more information.
