My first painted model and first model since my early teens!-85 mustang

04 January 2012 - 08:28 PM

Well she isn't too pretty.. I see a ton of little things I would like to fix or detail.. but this is IT .. It's done and I'm happy enough with it... I was always too afraid and nit picky about flaws when trying to build and always gave up.. but I knew I'd never get any better or accomplish anything without just building.. so this was a build I decided to finish no matter how it looked..

I used to build the pre-painted kits when I was an early teen (maybe even younger) and I've never painted a model myself.. so don't rag on me too bad about the sloppy lines and screw ups.. I was lowering it a bit and noticed the rear sat a little lower but I like it that way and no side view mirrors because I ruined the body enough trying to glue the dang bumper on LOL

first of all I must admit.. I've not finished a model since my early teens (I'm almost 21 now) and I've never painted a full model myself.. never any of the actual spray painting... so with that said I'm forcing myself to finish this model no matter how it's turning out.. no re-do on anything just going to finish it.

I'm "pretending" It's not really an svo as I'm just custom painting it and ignoring the decals.

color is a little grainy.. it could probably be polished actually but since this is my breaking out model I'm not going to worry about it.

planning to do a little bit more detail painting but that's about it..

Can't seem to get painting right...

well I keep trying to be more and more patient applying as even and thin coats as possibly and letting it dry.. but still I always have a run issue it's like I can't ever spray it light enough..

this is after about 3 passes with the airbrush eclipse siphon feed running 35psi

Is my pressure too much? I've tried playing around with it but it doesn't seem to do much.

could my paint be too thick or thin?

I have paint 2 parts thinner to 1 part paint and it's a milky texture but could it be off a little bit?

airbrushing with apple barrel/folk art acrylics?

09 December 2011 - 07:23 AM

I have a bunch of these acrylic paints laying around because I like them for brush painting and was curious if I could thin them out and use them with my airbrush?

what would I use to thin them out? could I use mineral spirits paint thinner ? I think I have a jug of that (somewhere)

Well as a kid I always put together the pre-painted plastic models from walmart and I'm ashamed to admit I've never finished a model I had to paint myself.. well.. here it is.... the model that will finally set me free of my fears of messing up haha..

so far that's all I have done.. chassis and bed together along with the basic engine parts..

I just about have everything glued together that I can until I start painting it.. eek...
