Simon,
For a late '80s Texas truck you only need a Texas Apportioned (if the truck will travel out of Texas) plate. For a truck that will only travel in Texas a truck plate is needed. Fuel decals for the side of the truck are a different story. As late as 1995 some states issued decals for fuel permits. Tennessee required the fuel permit number to be painted on the passenger side only. Don't get me started on the hassle of filing individual fuel tax reports with every state you were permitted in, mostly quarterly. Thankfully since '95 and the implementation of the International Fuel Tax Agreement all that is out the window.
If I can help any more please ask.
For you who build more reecent trucks I found this site which may help you with fuel decals:
Fuel decal pics and info.

I can't tell you exactly when these were built, probably while the originals were still on hobby shop shelves.
IMC Cougar II
ERTL Massey Ferguson
More photos of these two.
Original ERTL Paystar
MPC Mack DM800
More photos of these two, and the MF tractor.
The Paystar was redone about 2002, photos here.
I never finished the build, but this is the turbine engine from the original AMT Astro kit.
A few more turbine photos.

Buba, I have a couple albums that contain some photos taken at Buck Motorsports Park. Links are below, here are a few pics to whet your appetite:

Cummins KT in a cabover Brockway.

Hard to get good night-time action with my camera. I believe this is Tom Lindsay's KW also with Cummins KT power.

This Marmon had a Cummins V903 for power.
I'm certainly no expert, but i have picked up a few things. Engines of choice for the pro pullers are Cummins KTs (only available in resin), Detroit V12s (Bandag Bandit), Cat 3408s and Mack V8s. You will occasionally find a Cummins NTC or V903 (First release ERTL International Transtar conventional) or a Cat 3406. The pros run two or more turbos, water injection and ungodly fuel pressures.

Do you remember what kind of gas mileage it got.
I have always been curious
Man, that was a loooong time ago. Best I can remember/guess is around 6 give or take a couple tenths. Can't be sure 'cause back then I didn't obsess over fuel mileage like I do now.
