A Ferrari to Remember

02 May 2013 - 05:23 PM

With all due respect to Faust (Adam Rehorn) I didn't want to hijack his MPC Rainbow thread, but I was compelled speak in favor of the Ferrari Rainbow concept car. The Airfix kit is crisp and precise and it's more proportionally correct. The MPC issue is grossly disproportionate, they're not the same mold.

The 1976 Ferrari Rainbow is a product of the legendary Bertone styling house. It foretold the angular styling that followed through the 80's and it's styling contribution to the Lamborghini Countach is recognizable.

It's called the Rainbow because the hard top could be flipped up and slid down vertically behind the cockpit making it a rain or shine car. 3-litre, mid-engine V8.

The Airfix kit is a curbside with no engine. There is a battery box and suggestions that it used to motorized.

Taming Kit Chrome?

11 April 2013 - 06:02 PM

I want to use some custom rims for a project, they look great, but i think the chrome is just too bright. Yes, I can strip them and Alclad them, but I'd rather not unnecessarily complicate things. My question is, can you tone down kit chrome by clear coating with gloss or will clear coat do nothing? My line of thinking is the clear coat may not be as brilliant as the chrome, thusly softening the chrome's intensity. Thoughts?

Thin Styrene Strips vs. Glue

09 January 2013 - 04:37 PM

I'm trying to use thin plastic strips (Evergreen #110  .4mm x .5mm) for fine detailing but it disintegrates moments after glue hits it. I've used styrene glue and super glue. If the solvents are too strong for such small pieces, I would think it should melt not break. Or is the plastic too old and dry?

Flying cars, concept cars, custom cars, aero cars, streamliners, wings, show cars, fantasy, retro futurism, shiny steampunk, fins, bubble tops, bullets, anti-gravity, asymetric, avant garde. Can be real detroit concept cars or pure, fantastic fiction.

The science of it is not important. Like conceptual cars, the art of the idea is what counts. The spirit of the build is utopian. Battle machines and weaponry are out. Prefer no rust and gunk but if it contributes to the wonder of your machine it's allowed. Whether from the distant past looking to the near past, or today looking to the future. It doesn’t have to be our future, could be your grandfather’s vision, short term or long term.

Runs today through Dec. 31, 2013, can join anytime in between.

As usual, must show starting point, partial builds accepted but prefer builds that are less than 50-percent complete.

Can use anything; kits, glue bombs, blister packaging, toy parts, bottles, any material that supports a vision of future transportation from any era.

Looking for a tool like this...

12 December 2012 - 01:31 PM

A small roller with a convex head or ball head, maybe 1/2" to 2" wide. Something to use for rolling out plastic. I did a search on Micro Mark but not a thorough navigation, not knowing what it would be called. Where would a guy go for something like this, hardware store, cooking store, hobby store or...? Opinions?
