There are 4 pipes per side. They're kinda random lengths as they exit the fender....a wacky cartoonish vibe.

Yeah, the bodywork was extensive. I can't imagine that ANYONE could build this kit without doing some creative bodywork to get the body panels to fit together properly. The gaps around the front and rear fascias were horrible.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the fact that you'd take time to check out my unmarked Plymouth cruiser. You wouldn't believe how many times I've shown it, and it didn't even draw interest. Guess that's the nature of the vehicle, huh?....to remain inconspicuous.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the kind words. I'll be building the '70 Ford police cruiser in a similar style. Mike

Seems as though there are quite a few people that agree with us. I got the passenger's side reshaped as well. Looks great! Mike

While the new front end is greatly improved over the original, Round2 didn't get it quite right. The fenders are a little too 'bulgy' on the tops. I shaped mine down into the proper 'spear' shape....pretty much flat on the top edge.....compare my modified driver's side to the untouched passenger side.....

Wayne, I'd considered leaving the vinyl top off, but after looking at loads on pics on the net, the Olds just seemed to look a little odd without it. While I'm not a big fan of vinyl tops, in general, the Testors vinyl top paint system is very convincing, and I'm looking forward to applying it to this car. Mike

Thanks guys. I'm sorting through some wheels now....I found a sweet set of Rader mags that might just do the trick. Oh, and Monty, I used Duplicolor gray primer under the nail polish basecoat. Works like a charm. Mike

FIRST LOOK!..... Building this for my Dad, as a Father's Day gift. Dad has a real one back in '62, and I have a pic of my Mom sitting in the driver's seat......I'll frame a reprint of the pic, and include the model. Ssssshhhhhhh! Nobody tell.....it's a surprise! JUST sprayed the Tamiya Black basecoat. Once that's cured and shrunk back a bit, I'll spray the 2-part clear......followed by woodgraining ,etc. Meanwhile, I'll locate that pic of Dad's 1:1, and post it. Mike

Thanks Monty. I dig the color as well. It's tough to pick a hot color that doesn't look too 'toyish' on the larger bodied cars. So I use some of the more 'sophisticated' fine metallics in shades that resemble the factory colors of the era. I hear ya on the wheels. I like the big-and-littles in the '32 Ford kits, and I agree - they'll look great on this 442. But I've used them on quite a few builds, and I'm hoping to step (slightly) outside the box on this one. I'll keep a set of the 5-spokes handy as a plan 'B'. Thanks again!, Mike By the way, here's another big-bodied car I built this past year, the '66 Impala, using those wheels you recommended. I also used Pure Ice nail polish and urethane clear on this one.....

I might add - the decals have a matte finish, unlike the gloss-coated decals supplied in previous years. They are noticeably thinner as a result. The new Gremlin kit comes with matte-finished decals as well. They look GREAT under clearcoat.....very crisp, vivid, and FLAT. If you plan to apply them OVER finish, you may want to spritz them with a little clear first. Something to consider as you're planning your paint job and build. Personally, I clearcoat over decals, so these are a welcome surprise. Mike

This is my SECOND attempt at painting the '66 Olds 442. The first body is soaking in brake fluid as we speak, following a clearcoat mishap. Basecoat is Pure Ice "All Nighter" nail polish ($2 @ Wal-Mart), and topcoat is Napa/Martin Senour CrossFire 2-part urethane. I'll be using Testors Black Vinyl Top system for the roof. Any ideas on wheels and tires?? I may just use the kit supplied Rallys, and a set of redlines, but......?? Thanks for looking!, Mike

The Baltimore GM plant I worked in had windows high, and even some fold-open windows in the ceiling......they were great for allowing natural light in. I worked both first AND seconds shifts in that plant, and I can tell you, the natural light during the day was a pleasant bonus. Mike

My boy, Alex, and I attended the monthly CPMCC meeting today. The 'swap meet' always offers up some treasures...... Got this vintage mid-60's Dodge Coronet 'home-made' altered wheelbase built-up for cheap.......can't wait to rebuild this one!..... Also snagged this factory-sealed '32 Vicky kit for $15...... ALWAYS looking for some cool books and Hot Rod reference material........the hardback American Drag Racing book for $10, and the '67 and '71 Hot Rod magazines for a $1 each......YES!........ Next, I couldn't pass up this complete Dodge pickup kit for $8...... I was about halfway through a sweet '66 Olds 442 build when the freshly painted body and hood suffered some clear coat issues. I was able to nab this factory sealed kit for $14. I'll pull the body and hood from it, and prep them for paint tomorrow!..... Aaaaaaaaand, last, but not least.....I've been eye-balling this kit at Craig Holler's 'Train Depot' in Mt. Wolf, PA. for a couple of months now. We finally struck a fair deal today, and I left with this '76 Road Runner. Not cheap, but I'm happy to FINALLY have one......opened, ragged box, but DEAD MINT inside!....... So, all in all, an awesome day! Mike

This IS a resto.......the Candy Van, Sunchaser, etc., didn't have roof-ribs OR side-ribs. Round2 did exactly what they set out to.....back-date the tool and re-release the old Chevy Van kit. Being a builder, not a collector, I've watched the old unbuilt kits escalate in value for years now. I'm glad my search is over. Now I can buy these in quantity for a fraction of the price, and build away! Mike

+1 Not to derail this topic, but...... Tom Lowe is good in my book. I was in contact with him (via email) in the past, and I can assure you, he's conscientious and WANTS to deliver the products we've been longing for......ESPECIALLY the nostalgic automotive model kits we've been getting lately. It really erks me when I see some people bash or bad mouth the new re-releases from Round2, here on the board or elsewhere. At 45 years old, and a life-long modeler, I've watched our modeling hobby practically die in the 90's due to lack of interest AND lack of a desirable 'product' (blame diecast if it makes you happy), and it excites me to see some of these old model kits released once again. If you can't see WHY this is a great thing, you're beyond help. Big deal, maybe it's an old tool and a "chassis doesn't fit well", or "drip rails and panel lines are faint"......waaaaa!......please, take this opportunity to brush up on your modeling skills, and celebrate the fact that our hobby is enjoying a bit of a resurrection, AND that people like Tom Lowe and Round2 (and Revell, Trumpeter, and Mobius even!) are STILL producing plastic model kits, and even tooling up BRAND NEW KITS as well! Seriously, stop complaining, and get building! .....that's it. I'm off my soapbox, and I won't entertain any backlash or banter on this. I feel how I feel, and now that I've shared it, I'm done. Mike

Bluzboy66 replied to mopar01lee's topic in WIP: Model Cars
the PROPER spelling is P-R-O-P-E-R. ....jess funnin. Davin, I'm sooooo diggin' this build. I've been procrastinating a General build for many years. Well......actually.......I did build one when the original kit first came out. Your car is going to look killer. Mike -
That's it??!!......just mine and Steve's??

So, you can STILL build the 'after' Monte! Mike

1949 Mercury Convertible There is still life in that old AMT kit
Bluzboy66 replied to Peter Lombardo's topic in Model Cars
Nice Merc! In my opinion, that old AMT Merc trumps the newer Revell Merc kit, as far as body proportion goes. Gotta love Revell for including sooooo many awesome extra parts, though! Mike
