  2. Thanks Rick. We also had a guy build the Li'l Red Wagon, and he got his to do a wheelie the whole way as well. Guess it's just a popular thing to do with that model...lol As for decals, here's Jeff's website, click on "categories" to see his line up. http://firebird-designs.ecrater.com/ Contact him if you want any custom work done. I did send him the Duster body so he could make the decals fit better for this project. All in all, I'm very happy with how the project turned out, and the decals were a big part of it.
  3. Well, I think I got it done... First though, I'd like to say a big thank to Jeff of Firebird Designs for making the special custom decals for me. The decals went on pretty easy, much easier though I had thought they would for such large pieces. A side view of the real car... A side view of the my car... A front view of the real car... A front view of my car... And a few more... Is it perfect? Nope, nothing I make ever is... But for the effort I put into it, I'm very happy with how it came out
  4. Progress has been a little on the slow side, but did manage to get some silver on the body... Around the motor Rear bumper painted on... Also removed the chrome off the rear wheels and painted those silver. You can also see silver along the bottom of the body as the real car has. Got some front wheel inserts from a Polar Lights kit that match the car. There a little darker color than I was aiming for, but they'll work. Next is the part where I'm really nervous...laying the decals on. It's now time to bring this all together...
  5. Ok, so I just figured out Chris's secret about the motor... He took a picture of a real motor, and photo-shopped it so it looks like it's on his work bench.... Amazing work going on here Chris!
  6. A good turnout on this unusually warm day (60+ degrees on February 25th ) with 7 racers entering 84 cars in total. Starting things off with the 1/32 Street class, I came home without the qualifying paperwork so have no ET's. We had 16 entries and the top qualifiers were cars that were running for the 1st time. A Dungeon prepped Carrera Mustang took TQ honors, and right on it's heels was a AWilder prepped Monogram Mustang and a SPE prepped Carrera Superbird driven by Phil.The Dungeon prepped Mustang was able work it's way to the final. On the other side of the ladder, #10 qualifier, a SPE prepped Corvette driven by Kip pulled some upset wins including knocking out the #2 qualifier Andy. He earned the right to battle for the win. In a classic Ford/Chevy race, both cars red lighted with the Corvette leaving 1st thus handing the win to the Mustang. A side note was Andy had run the quickest ET of the class with his Mustang with a .919 run The 1/32 Hot Rod class with 17 entries was up next. Kip was able to grab TQ honors with the Dungeon prepped Black Beauty entry with a .837 run. Right behind was the AWilder prepped Camaro with a .849 and Kip again, this time with a SPE prepped Dragster running a .855. Kip was able to take the Black Beauty rig all the way to the final. On the other side, # 7 qualifier Andy driving a SPE prepped 57 Chevy, came up thru and earned the right to try for the win. Along the way, he had taken out his #2 qualifier . A little history-last time, Kip made it to the finals twice, and lost both times. Also, Black Beauty made it to the finals, and lost. So odds weren't looking too good for him. But, he put the odds aside, and blasted a .848 run for the win. Congrats Kip! Out came the bigger cars, starting with the Stock class with 11 entries. The Dungeon prepped cars were on a roll this night, this time with the Nails machine grabbing TQ spot with a .999 run. Right behind was a SPE (I think) prepped Ford driven by I don't recall with a 1.017 and a AWilder prepped Camaro with a 1.023. The Nails machine was able to work it's way to the final. One of the semi races saw the Nails machine go against the SPE prepped King Purp Camaro. You want to talk about a close race... On the other side, #5 qualifier Jungle running a SPE prepped Jalopy, came up thru. So we had an all Jalopy final... The Nails machine (pink and white in the pic) drove away for the win with a convincing .996 run. Afterwards there was some talk in the pits about outlawing "pie crust" tires, but it was quickly snuffed. Things were starting to get heated up when the Comp class came out. TQ went to a AWilder prepped Hudy Camaro running a .834, with a Mountain Man prepped entry called Mtn Runner (.862) and another AWilder prepped 8 Ball Cobra (.863) not far behind. Andy was able to take his Hudy entry to the final. On the other side, the #4 qualifier Dungeon prepped Go Ape Gasser came up thru to face the Hudy entry. In a tight race, the Go Ape entry was able to wheelie it's way to the win with a .864 pass. The crowd was now plenty amped up to watch the Top Eliminator class. As well they should be. With a near record 28 entries (record is 30), there was sure to be a lot of exciting racing. And quick too. TQ went to Andy running a SPE prepped Trudell Ford Mustang entry with a .680 pass (told you this class was quick). The next 2 were very close with the Dungeon prepped Wild One (formerly known as Wild Deuce) and a Mountain Man owned SPE prepped Chevy both running a .686. With 28 cars entered we ran a run off race for the 16th spot, and #20 qualifier Phil was able to take Dana's Trailer Hood prepped Mickey D's car thru the ladder and earn the right to run against the Trudell Ford. Though Andy was able to dispose of Phil in the 1st round, he fell victim to #9 qualifier 41 SPE Special in the 2nd round. The semi saw a new WIP (work in progress) Dungeon prepped Country Girl FC (#5 qualifier) take out the 41 SPE Special and into the final. On the bottom side of the ladder, the Wild One (still a WIP) was able to advance all the way to the final, making it an all Dungeon prepped finale. The Wild One had made the final at the last meet. Could it come thru this time for the win? The Country Girl was having no part of that, left the line 1st and held on for the win with a .726 pass.

  8. Not a whole lot done since last week, but am moving along slowly... Sanded off the flashing that was on the body. Much cleaner appearance, and should allow a better surface for the decals Since I had moved the motor ahead and lowered the body, that meant the kit supplied fire wall/interior didn't fit right anymore. So had to modify it some, and make a new piece for the flat area behind the motor. I can tell you it was a bit of a pain, cuz not only does it have to fit around the scoop and blower, but I also have to contend with the windshield. I think I have it though... I think that's my last hurdle before I can start laying decals on it (fingers crossed)... Now I have to tell you this "funny" (read annoying!) story... When I had painted the chassis, I also painted the roll cage. When they dried, I brought them over to the work bench. Now, I recall specifically thinking to myself..."I don't need the roll cage yet, so I'll just set it aside 'over here' "... You know where this is going right? A couple days later, I went to get the roll cage, and I couldn't remember where "over here" was.... For over a week, I couldn't find it. Talk about being a little frustrated with oneself. Fortunately, I was able to continue the build, and my thinking was I'll come across it along the way (at least I hoped so). Couple days ago, I had put some white paint on the body, so while waiting for it to dry, I worked on another car. I was working on a wheel assembly, and dropped the insert. Well, you know how round things go when you drop them, and how they stay right where it dropped, right? WRONG!!! I swear these things have a mind of their own when they hit the floor, and will roll incredible distances. Even further than if you threw them!!! So yeah, that meant me crawling around on the floor looking for a stupid wheel insert. And wouldn't you know it, I found the roll cage on the floor BEHIND the chair. Now I KNOW this wasn't where "over here" was, but I will tell you I was quite happy at this point I was even happy I dropped the BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH wheel insert Oh, that insert, you won't believe it, but about 20 minutes later, I found it....in a box of parts!!! Yeah, it never made it to the floor, but landed in a box under the work bench.... You may have noticed in the pic above, that the roll cage is now glued to the chassis... So it's true, all is well when it ends well (or something like that )

No work on the car since the last post, but hope you don't mind if I "brag" a bit In the race last night on the SPE drag strip, in a field of 28 entries, it qualified 5th with a .703 run (TQ was .680). I was quite happy with the build at this point. But against a stout field of cars, it worked it's way thru and into the final and won the race!! So yes, I'm really happy with how the build is going so far. This week, I hope to work on the final preps on the body to get it ready for paint and decals. Driveline components consist of using a H&R Lightning motor (40k) running a 10/30 gear ratio. Tires are homemade urethanes using kit tires as a mold.
  10. I like what you're doing here! As to your earlier question about black steel wheels or ones that match the front, I vote for the steel wheels. Just feel it looks more period correct (could be wrong though)

  12. Managed to get a little progress the past couple days... Made notches in the body for the headers... Mounted some functional wheelie bars... Fabricated a drop arm for the guide. This will allow the front end to come up, yet the guide will stay in contact with the track... Had put a couple light coats of white on the body, then realized I have some sanding to do on account of the flashing... I learned last night we're racing this weekend. So I'm gonna stick a motor in it, wire it up and give it some shakedown runs and see where she's at before continuing on.
