  1. Popular Mechanics mag March 1954 has an article outlining the use of GMC inline engines for high performance use. There are 3 pictures of dual coil/12 plug distributors. The text of the article says "for real efficiency you'll need two coils of high output plus a twin-point distributor." The pictures show single plug heads. I could not find this article on the web. If you have trouble getting a copy send a PM and I'll get a copy to you. As a side note, 6 months after this article was published, the small block chevy became the engine swap of choice. :roll:
  2. The Lincoln is beautiful in it's own way. But here is a question for you. If you put a bunch of late fifties cars in front of a bunch of non car people and then asked if they could pick the one that was a flop because of it's styling, would they pick out the Edsel?
  3. The new front end looks like it could be scratch built in plastic, but how do I convince my wife we need to buy a new nose for the real thing in my driveway?
  4. I have used the front tires from the Monogram Pro Stock kits. The tires are high speed, light weight, modern (sort of) and LSR cars don't need alot of tread. The kits have not been out for a while but are pretty cheep at the swap meets, remember ProStreet?. Good wheels too!

  6. I finally found an old sewing machine foot control for my motor tool. It has two outlets, one foot controlled the other staight through. I set the tool speed to the max I want to use,(ie. 1/2 speed), then use my foot to control it. You can start and stop with one hand on the work piece and one firmly holding the tool. It will really make the motor crawl and prevent meltdown. Why did I wait so long?

  8. Very nice truck! 8) I like your take on the engine. By adding modern detailed parts to the kit block you get easy assembly and a good looking engine compartment when it's all done. That's what I like about plastic, a razer saw and a good file make anything glue together and you don't even have to buy a gasket set!

  10. I am no expert, (stop reading now) but the full size Vega shared the same floor pan with the Monza. MPC had some well detailed chassis back in the 70's which is the last time a Monza kit held a place on the store shelves. Expect to modify the wheelbase a bit. Do not buy a Revell Monza. Good luck!

  15. Your rusty cowl does look very good. I've used simular techniques using white glue, rubber cement and table salt. I must say the salt seems to work very good for you. The paint has that bubbled look that is very important. I am looking forward to see how you tackle the corroded aluminum.
  16. The decals were in the 66 Galaxie re-issue Circa 1986. (PN 6517-8630) I am willing to send my two sets if they are still wanted.
  17. I think there is a simple inspiration to work ratio in play with this hobby. When you get a brilliant idea you just jump into it and start the motor tool. Then as the project goes together you either see a good result or the mountain of work that lies ahead. This is especially dangerous when there are dozens of other kits at arms length. (By the way, how many of us were told by our mother not to start another model until the last one was finished.) I find it very hard to redo something that dose not come out right the first time. I do agree with Jairus, if you only measure yourself by the stuff that gets done, you miss out on all the learning and relaxation that goes into every minute you spend with the hobby.
  18. I love the whole concept! By going the "weathered" route you take the viewer beyond the simple fantasy build into a world where this thing's existance is assumed and taken for granted. You also said you were not going to go nuts on authenticity but just make it feel right. Good call. Keep it fun. Get it done. 8)
  19. Steve, The chart looks excellent. It is what I would have done if I wasn't just a hack with this computer thingy. When I made my list the computer justified all info to the left, so lines that start with ,for example "2x4bbl" should fall under the engine type listed above. Thanks for putting in the effort ! 8)

I did not list obvious sources like Mercury engines in Mercury kits. I did list some interesting and sought after parts combos. Please add to the list, but only those that you know are correct so that we can have a reliable resource.
  21. I was thinking of creating a list of available engines and the kits they are found in. I do not wish to reinvent any wheels. Does anyone know of any such lists posted? Is anyone but me interested in such a waste of time? I would like to compile a list of reasonably available kits as sources for various engines, mostly street rod types. Slant 6...AMT Deora Cross Ram Inducted Mopar...Johan '68 Chrysler 300 Pontiac V-8...Revell 56 F-100 If this type of database would be a service maybe we could put it together here for future reference.

But the reason I've been here two weeks without sayin' Howdy is because... just read the subject line. Howdy :wink: I live in the great northwest. Salem, Oregon. Been building model cars since '73 I have broad interests in cars but center on American stuff of the sixties and older. Hot rods dominate my thoughts right now with a leaning toward rough edged fenderless death traps. Weathering, fabricating detail parts and lately body modifications keep me happy. I don't have a way to post pictures right now so just use you imagination here. [ ]
