Homes in So Cal in area's people WANT to live in, are in an extremally short supply, are being bought up by investment firms AND foreign government for their use.  This has caused homes to WAY out run inflation.  Supply and demand. Side note: My brother in law passed back at the first of the year. When we put his house on the market we got 15 offers. 14 were investment firms willing to pay over market price. And this was in NC not So Cal. Home prices are driven by these firms, not demand alone now.

Model kits, if looking at inflation alone, should be $18 today. So there are other factors cause kits to cost TWICE today that the same kit cost in 1962. Supply and demand is NOT one of them. The size of the market is the main cause driving kit cost.  TWO very different market drivers. Homes and kit cost could be compared is there were 3 buyers for every kit made......but that is not happening.

So you can say 'the cost of everything is up' and be true. The reason for cost increase is varied.  That is the statement I was making. Thx

I appreciate the reply and explanation 🙂

Yes, homes have gone up a LOT. But it's unfair to compare a model kit increase to a homes. Our first home in So Cal in 1962 was $10,000. I looked on Zillow the other day and the house is listed at HALF a MILLION! Does that mean a kit tooled in 1962 is a bargain today at $36??? It's a apple and orange compare.  Kit prices are more what the market will bare vs market size which is drastically smaller than even in the 1980's. Doubt we will ever see a model company needing to run a kit 7/24 like MPC had to do with the Duke's Charger, sold a million kits over the years. Now 5,000 in 3 months is a 'huge hit'. Face it.....kit prices match market size and it ain't going to change any time soon.

Why would it be unfair to compare? I don’t see how the size of the market is relevant here. If a house that was worth 10.000 bucks in 62 is now going for 500.000, there is no logical reason why a kit worth 2 bucks back then shouldn’t cost 30 bucks today. People say it’s the same kit, much like your house is also the same… sure, the products are the same, but one thing that has changed drastically and isn’t the same at all is the value of currency, which has depreciated because of inflation, which happens when… and this is where I have to stop because the next word in that sentence is a no-no here 😎

  3. Here we go again... Similar topics spring up quite often, and it seems like many people on here do not understand the concept of inflation. Simply put, one dollar in 1970 did not have the same absolute value as one dollar today - it was worth much more.

Real cars back then cost a couple thousand dollars brand new! How much do they cost today?

Prices then and now cannot be compared directly like that, without taking years of global inflation into consideration.

  4. Not a trade as such, but stitchdup (Les Budge from Scotland) came through for me with a rare part, so I hereby wanted to publicly express my appreciation and say what a great guy he is! Thanks!

As it is visible from the pic, the kit is not pristine, many parts have been removed from the sprues, dechromed, and some have paint on them (main shell pieces are primered white), but it is 100 percent complete and nothing has been assembled/glued. Wheels have slight tire melt, but nothing that cannot be fixed. Instructions have seen better days and have some paint on them, but definitely usable. Decals are perfect. If required, I can provide more detailed photos/description of the state of the kit. All told, it is a fantastic, very detailed kit of my favorite ever motorbike, and I was going to build/finish it originally, but then decided it was too large for my preference and I got the smaller Tamiya 1/12 kit instead, so this one now has to go. I’d prefer to trade without the original box, due to size, but that is negotiable. I will be on holiday, away from my apartment, for a couple of weeks, so I’d hold any potential trades off until I return home, but I am posting this now as a feeler until then. As for my wants, despite the state of my Ducati, it is a fairly rare, long out of production kit so I’d like to trade it for a single complete and unstarted 1/25 or 1/24 car kit. My interests are pretty wide, however, and I will give most anything a chance, so do not hesitate to make me an offer, but I’d prefer newer kits and here is a shortlist of what I am currently looking for:

    REVELL

“California Wheels” or “Lowrider” kits (37 Ford street rod, 59 Caddy - hardtop or convertible, 66 El Camino, 66 Chevelle wagon, 67 Chevelle, 58 or 60 Impala, possibly others…)

    “Trucks” series kits (37, 40 or 50 Ford, 64 fleetside or 65 stepside Chevies…)

Various Camaros, preferably 67 SS or Nickey, possibly some earlier Pontiacs (no 80’s and 90’s cars please)…

    AMT/MPC

40’s and 50’s pickups (Coke or Texaco 50 Chevy 3100, or 60 Chevy with go kart, 34 or 53 Ford 3 in 1 kits…), 50’s, 60’s and 70’s landyachts (big Fords Starliner and Galaxy, Mercury Marauder…), four door cars (Supernatural Impala, police cars, taxis, Joker goon car…), 70’s vans (Phantom, Vantasy…)

I also like European cars and would trade for various Fujimi/Hasegawa/Aoshima/Tamiya Porsches, Lamborghinis (Miura, Huracan or Aventador), Ferraris, BMW’s, Mercedes and other.
I would also consider most Jo-Han kits, which can be decent rebuilders/junkers (especially Cadillacs)…
Otherwise, I might also accept a trade for a couple “run of the mill kits”. Let me know what you have if interested in the Ducati, the worst I can do is refuse 🙃

    Thanks!

    Matija

  6. Unfortunately, I cannot find a good pic of the decals I need, I’ve just seen them in youtube videos. However, as much as I appreciate your offer, I need the decal sheet from the latest release of the kit, because older ones do not have the detail I need.

I need decals from the issue with this box art specifically:

    Thanks!

I think it may have been for the Japanese market only. I’ve seen Italeri aircraft reboxed as Tamiya for “JDM”.

Here are a couple of links which show the Fujimi kit, with instructions and art from the sides and ends of the kit box.

That is very interesting. Photos in the links you posted look convincingly real indeed. It could still be some crafty PS, or even an entire faux-box and instructions, but I don’t see why anyone would go through so much trouble. More likely, as you suggest, it may perhaps be some sort of rare Japanese market prototype kit or limited test run release that never made it into final production - much like the car itself? I have heard of some Japanese kits like that, but never seen one of these before. Does anyone know more about it? I am quite intrigued. Apologies about rambling in your wanted thread btw!

  8. I would definitely say that is fake box art. Fujimi only ever reboxed the Revell 300 SLR race car, and the Uhlenhaut Coupe was only done by Revell, at least according to Scalemates and most other sources I’ve searched. But good luck searching for one, I guess. As for the AMT and Tamiya kits, as someone already pointed out, they are a different car all together (300 SL Gullwing)… similar name and design, but not nearly the same. One is an SL, the other SLR.

  9. It’s only new on the US market, it has been around in Europe for what seems like forever now, but I gave up on it years ago, mostly because of the needle clogging issue you’ve come across. But I wasn’t a fan of applying glue through the needle method anyway. I found it difficult to control the amount applied. I much prefer brush on Tamiya cements personally.

  10. Sad news. He died in a hotel room in Bogota. Might have had a bit too much of that Colombian sugar

It is interesting to see them performing Led Zeppelin songs with Page and Jones, and shows how Hawkins and Grohl occassionally changed places behind the drums/mic. I am a big fan of the Foo Fighters’ earlier stuff, and I think their late 90’s album The Colour and the Shape (on which Hawkins joined the band) is one of the best rock albums in history, with Everlong as an absolute hit for the ages. Hopefully, the band will be able to continue.

But I'm kinda wondering who's going to be making parts under the current circumstances, and what the condition of the national and local postal service is.

Guys from USCP are still occasionally active on their Facebook group, they say commercial postal service has, expectedly, been suspended pretty much since day one of the war. All of their team/families and facilities are safe for now.

  12. I just received a kit from Bill aka Ace-Garageguy, and even though he has yet to receive the package from my end of the deal, I can already safely say he is a great trader, courteous in communication and very meticulous with packing. Considering his reputation here, I’m sure he needs no validation from me, but for what it’s worth… trade away with utmost confidence with this gentleman! Thanks for the trade Bill!

  13. The engine is almost completely built but not painted, and two “wires” have been broken off one wheel piece. Otherwise, kit is complete. Great rare builder! I can provide better/more detailed pics if someone has a serious offer.  I realize the kit isn’t mint, but it is sought after, so I’d like something equally desirable in trade. Can be similar condition, of course. I was thinking a Jo-Han Caddy (72 Eldorado or Rancher). Otherwise, a Tamiya Mercedes 500 SEC Lorinser or Aoshima Mercedes SL65AMG Black Series. I might consider others, more run of the mill but higher value kits, including Fujimi Porsche 356A Carrera Speedster, Hasegawa Miura, perhaps some modern Fujimi/Aoshima Lamborghinis… Or something along those lines perhaps. Let me know what you have if interested! Thanks! Matija 😀

Is the Italeri (misshapen?) MB 500 SLC the same as ESCI kit?

    1291732-27767-29-pristine.jpg

I have couple of those (unbuilt) and I don't see any major problems with their bodies.

Yes, the Italeri is a reissue of the Esci kit you posted. The biggest issue with the kit are tires and somewhat underwhelming engine bay, but that is easily solved, and also find most everything else fine.

About the Mercedes, I'm wondering which is better "body wise", the (ex) Esci or the Otaki kit?

    Tis.

Perhaps someone else can shed light on this because I am not familiar with the Otaki kit.
