Scale I Build

  1. If anyone has any nifty tools, especially ones that are not normally associated with model building...post them up! I donโ€™t know where I got this? I found it one day in the garage with a bunch of drill bits. It has three collets that will take anything from a #80 up to 1/16โ€. I use it by hand, in my cordless drill and in my drill press. It runs very true.๐Ÿ˜
  2. Hello I am quite new to modelling and I am interested in any techniques and tools that I have not used before in miniature painting. I am interested in tools to get to a higher level or specifically for model car upgrades and conversions. What do you recommend that is not basic equipment on a modeler's desk? I recently bought one of these round cutters for diorama making or wheel and fender conversions. But I think I will mostly use it to cut out stencils. (First I will be correcting the VW Beetle's start numbers, which you may have seen before or you can find in my signature.)
  3. A member of this forum referred me to that company (in Hong Kong) for some metal sticker Mercedes scripts and logos. Their website is https://www.zoomonmodel.com . They have a fairly wider range of model details and supplies. The website is fairly easy to browse, and ordering is also easy. They take PayPal. Don't let the prices scare you - they are in Hong Kong Dollars. For example the sheet of those Mercedes scripts is priced at HK$32.00 which is currently about US$4.08 (which is rather inexpensive for this type of item). I ended up ordering a bunch of items. Shipping cost (to USA) was HK$140.00 (US$17.84) and it took about 2 weeks to arrive. What a great find! Here are some of the items I ordered. The relief-etched set to 50 US license plates looks really interesting, but the decals seem a bit thick, so I don't know how well it will conform to the plate's surface. But make sure to order 2 sets since only single plate from each state is included. I didn't, so I'll have to get another set.
  4. After seeing so many nice builds from others AND getting tired of "spitty" rattle cans, I am going to try my hand at airbrushing. After watching a dozen Youtube videos, I purchased a bunch of items to help me get started (hopefully, successfully). I made my own safe and mess-free decanter from a automotive Freon injector and a wide (enough) air intake band clamp. It works really well. Did I miss anything?
  5. I'm revamping my work bench and looking for good ideas. What are you guys working on nowadays? Any essential tools? Here's my battle station in its natural state of use. Just 2 2x4 plywood joined together with biscuits, and painted with a semi gloss chemical resistant paint and held up by TV tray tables. I drilled several holes for various use like the rack, airbrush stand, brushes and lamp. I'd say the magnetic strip is the most essential thing I have for organizing files and cutters. Gonna make a spray booth and get a bright a$$ led shop hood.
  6. What model building supplies and tools do you take along for "on the road"model building?Do you have a traveling tool kit with stuff all neatly secured in a wooden case? Or hands fulll of stuff thrown into an old cigar box held closed with a rubber band?Show us what you grab on your way out the door to keep your projects moving along when you're away from your away from your main workbench.
  7. This is my first post. I have a small collection of diecast models, all pre-assembled. I'd like to start building my models. I'd really appreciate your help with 3 questions: 1) Which kits are the best for newbies? (Nothing too simple, but nothing hard either.) 2) What would a standard set of modeling tools consist of? Does anyone sell these tools as a package? 3) Is there a book or books that you'd recommend modelers read? Thanks in advance for your replies. I'm exciting to get started!
  8. So what modeling tools have you bought at Harbor Freight? What were the "Good Deals"? Which ones were Duds? Good Deals: 1.) 6" Digital Calipers ($14.99 current sale price) - Just make sure they're off when stored 2.) Safety Glasses (Couple of Bucks, Eyesight Priceless) 3.) Small Ratchet Bar Clamps ($2.00) 4.) 30 Peice Mini Drill Bit Set - sharp out of the package! 5.) DeLuxe Airbrush (Decent Starter Double Action Airbrush for the money) 6.) Dental Picks and Carving Tools 7.) Airbrush Compressor (Paid around $50 a while ago, still in use as back up to a higher $$$ Name Brand Compressor) What else have you found at Harbor Freight that you use on your modeling workbench?
