  1. Some of you regulars know that I used to build box art models for AMT back during the Ertl days. I built display models ranging from mostly cars to even Star Wars from 1990 to 1995. The last three cars I did were for the Chevrolet Classics set shown below. Once they were built, as always I would hand them over to the Ertl Company and I might occasionally see them on the box, in the catalogs, or in the Blueprinter. When Ertl was finished with them, they would raffle or auction them off at model car events, then donate the proceeds to the Model Car Museum in Salt Lake City, Utah. I have no idea where most of them went after their box art days, but one day, while perusing Spotlight Hobby's predecessor, the Hobby Heaven Message Board, I saw a post by the late "Viper" Dave McGaughey showing the 1958 Chevy Impala I built for the box. I contacted Dave a few times over the years, inquiring about purchasing it, but his reply was always "it's in a good home". Sadly, David McGaughey passed away in 2018. I reached out to one of his sons asking about the model, but never got a reply. Then I reached out to mutual friend Ted "Chopper" Lear, who informed me that Dave had sold much of his collection to Richard Geis. So I messaged Richard in 2018 and asked if he knew of the model in question. Two years later, I got a Facebook message from Richard, apologizing for the delayed response, as he had recently just got back on Facebook. He had the model all along, having won a raffle for it, and that he would be happy to sell it back to me for what he had in it, plus shipping. Needless to say, the deal was consummated, and I am happy to report that one of my very favorite builds has returned, and Richard had indeed given it a very good home over these past two decades. And so here it is! You are probably wondering where the glass is. Most box art builds for Ertl were done sans glass, as it induced glare and distortion. Instead, the retouchers airbrushed (and later Photoshopped) the glass in. Box art models can lead rather rough lives during their travels. A sharp eye will reveal that during Ertl's ownership, it had been damaged, and the front hood and grille trim rather crudely glued back on. (It didn't leave my house with those big glue smudges on the hood!) Fortunately that old Krylon Teal paint is pretty robust, and I was able to polish a lot of that out after this photo was taken. At some point I'll be fixing the trim, along with the now glued solid steering. And the missing wind splits will be replaced on the fenders. The radiator hose and oil filler were there when it was delivered to Ertl. They will be replaced. Given the tight time constraints, these were no contest models. I built all three in about a week. So things that didn't show, like drive shafts, shocks, and on this one, even the exhaust were left off. In retrospect, I probably should have added the exhaust. And who knows, that could still happen. I've got a few extra 58 Impalas in the stash. it was a very different world a quarter of a century ago in 1995 when I built this model. My oldest two kids, now in their mid 30s were 8 and 9 years old, my mom and dad were both still alive, and I was a long haired guy going to college for an Engineering degree. Looking at this 58 Impala brings me right back to those days... I want to thank Tom Carter for the creating Hobby Heaven, and now Spotlight Hobbies Message Board for making this reunion possible, Ted Lear for hooking me up with Richard Geis, and especially Richard, for not only taking such great care of it, but being kind enough to reunite me with this bit of my history, one that I will be able to pass on to my son. And I want to thank anyone who took the time to let me share this story with them.
  2. What's good all, started cleaning off (dusting) shelves and cases, thought it would be a good time to share some pics of some older builds. This was the old Monogram 65' Impala kit, for the most part box stock aside from MAS steering wheel, wheels and air cleaner, tires may have been some American Satcos. The interior is detailed with flocking, BMF, engine was kit provided, wired, fuel line etc., paint and clear was Sikkens, color was a newer Chevy Blue Pearl. Kit was fun to build, went together fairly well with minimal issues. Just realized I still need to add a mirror to the driver door. ettm
  3. Started in 2011, I gave it a Tamiya Metallic red paint job with a wooden deck tan interior. I have some of the trim BMF but need to finish it. This got interrupted by those Corvette kits!
  4. Before I decided to get my 5 year old Corvette projects done, I started this one. Basically box stock except for a tire and wheel swap. The chrome trim on the side has held me up on this one. I need to get back to it soon though.
  5. Never cared to much for the 66 from the design stand point. Saw someone else's build the other day and thought it looked OK, so I decided to get one for the collection. The model came out real well, and the car doesn't look too bad in black. I believe someone had an issue with the windshield and rear window not having much room to glue in, and that was a major issue I had as well. Over all though, it's a good kit.   6. Been waiting on this to come out for awhile. I had nothing to say but good things about the model, to start. However, when it came time to put the chassis on, there came a fit issue. It was a struggle to get it in right and the front never did line up quite right. There's a bit of a gap. I also found out that the hood is too short! It needs to be just a little bit longer to fit correctly. So I had to push it forward a bit and leave a small gap. However, it doesn't line up with the lines of the car either.   8. Just completed my latest batch of 3 1960's custom full size cars all with opening doors. 1962 Chevrolet Impala Started life as a convertible. Added custom vacuum formed roof which is done as a vinyl top. Tamiya dark blue with Tamiya light blue pearl top and interior. Vinyl top material is masking tape. This has a more "formal" style roof line. 1962 Pontiac Catalina Replaced the top with a custom top. Painted in Matt yellow with a pale green interior and lowered 1965 Buick Riviera Custom roof, added 4 scale inches to the rear quarter panel, added sunroof. Opened trunk and added amplifiers and huge speakers. photo etched grill with headlights set in behind it. Paint is Tamiya light pink pearl with satin white under pink lace. That's it, all three.
  9. Hello, my name is Brad I live up in Canada (Ontario). I'm new the the board. I could use some advice and help with this huge project no pun intended. The idea is to create a 1/6 scale replica of the 1967 4 door Impala featured in "Supernatural" using 3d printed parts that I can hopefully get made into some sort of mold to create more for much less than the original cost of the 3d printed parts. I like the show a bit but I'm more about the car, I love that car. I've recently bought a 3ds max model of the 1967 impala to get started. It cost me around $100, kinda expensive I know but it was the most accurate one I could find and it was much cheaper than 3d scanning parts for an existing model like the greenlight impala. 3d printing something like this in poly-jet or sla will be expensive, probably $2000 at the cheapest so I need to really figure this all out before getting a huge print made up. I'd like to get a mold made of some of these parts like the body to make more so that It will be much less expensive to do a second or third. I'm not sure which direction to take with designing it, I could simplify parts like hinges and steering mechanism and leave out a lot of details like suspension to make this a bit easier or go all out for accuracy. Everything from how to make this simpler in design for functionality (for example: wheels turn, wheels move, doors hood & trunk open & close, how will everything attach) to what materials to make it out of are what I am confused and very overwhelmed by. I don't know yet. I've been thinking about this ocd a bit and am having a hard time just wanting to give up on the idea even though it will be difficult and Is going to be a some what large learning curve for me as I have never done anything like this before. I'm not really a modeler, I haven't built anything before and to be honest right now I'm only interested in this project as far as model building goes (I'm a bit ocd about it). I first wanted to try the ecto-1 from Ghostbusters in 1/6 scale but after not being able to find a good enough 3d model of it I settled on the Impala, besides the ecto-1 would be too far out of my price range right now. the impala seems simple enough. I'm good enough with 3d design but have never created anything to be 3d printed for functional moving parts before. The 3d model I have bought has everything in high detail, engine and all luckily. If I was to get this 3d printed does any one here know of a company that could make molds of it? I'm not even sure what material of mold style would be best for this. I don't even know what material to get it made out of even if I get a mold made. ABS? some kind of resin? what kind of resin? I'm a noob for sure with all of this and figured this was the best place to start for help. There is so much to learn it's overwhelming me. I'm in no real rush to do this so I am looking to take this slow until everything is ready to print. Sorry if this sounds like one long run on sentence. I guess I should write a list of things to get figured out so I'm not going in circles about it all in my head. Let know know what you guys think about this project. So, the web theme for NNL East this year is the AMT 63 Impala kit that was reissued last year: I did some brainstorming on what to do and was pretty much set on doing some form of drag car with the kit, until I saw this 63 online: I think it’s a hearse conversion, but it’s retained the low roofline of the stock car, and seems to be a sedan which has had the rear window moved back and the roof lengthened rather than using the more-logical (but rarer, I assume?) station wagon as a basis. Then, I fell down a rabbit hole of reading about the interesting world of ‘street freaks’... ...and a plan was born! I figured a street freak version of that hearse would be a pretty interesting build, and I liked the idea of combining some of those gasser influences into a street car. A quick mockup before I started hacking plastic... I can already tell that this build is going to involve more scratch building than I planned on, not least because the kit chassis has almost everything moulded in, but I’ll start with the fun stuff. My plan is similar to what the builder of that 1:1 seems to have done - just lengthen the roof and slide that rear window right back. Used my new Tamiya scriber, mostly, to score some lines like so... Then removed the rear deck lid from the section I’d removed: And reattached the rear window portion as far back as it would go: Those black styrene strips are to keep it aligned whilst the glue dried, and to give me something to attach a new panel to, to extend the roof: The roof panel itself is pretty flat, but those curved edges seemed like they were going to be tricky to recreate so I built up a little thickness of styrene bar in the gaps so that I can sand them smooth and shape them to match the existing shape: And that’s about where I’m at so far - I’ll get some sanding and shaping done on the body tomorrow when the glue’s set up, and then we can start figuring out how tricky it’s going to be to make this thing into a jacked up pseudo-Gasser! More soon, soon as I’ve done more!
  12. Does anyone out there have any reference photos of the Bub Strickler James Hylton 1970 Impala? I have the decal sheet and the one reference pic below. Looking for pics of front and rear of car along with interior. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  14. Just got the new release of the AMT 63 Impala yesterday. The body does not look too bad. There seems to be a little gap at the leading edge of the hood, I think the radiator support is a bit too wide, should be an easy fix. Tail lights are molded in, but should not be too hard to detail now a days. Engine is a bit of a mis-mash. The block, heads, fan, fan belts, alternator, the two carburetors, and distributor are from the AMT 64 Impala kit. The intake and exhaust manifolds, valve covers, and air cleaner are from the AMT 62 Bel Air kit. I'll be using the kit supplied frame on this build. More later!
  15. My latest project, a Revell '64 Impala SS done as a street machine. I am taking the engine and tires/wheels from the AMT 68 El Camino Street Machine kit and transporting them onto the Revell Chevy. I am going to use the lowered suspension for this build. The tires are big and littles so I will have a rake once it's done. Color I think will be Mythical Maroon. 396 Big block with street blower from El Camino kit. I'm still in the process of building the engine. Tires, wheels, from El Camino kit with headers from AMT 70 Impala kit. I had to move the transmission crossmember back for proper alignment of the engine.
  16. The next one was supposed to be the new (a few years ago at least) Super Shaker 64. But I had trouble with the paint so I found this old body as a stand in. Painted with Testors' Classic White. You are seeing the tire/wheel combo I'm using for it. I took the 327 from the 65 Chevelle wagon kit and turned it into a 283 (by swapping out the valve covers for ones that say 'Chevrolet").   17. This one used to be a rose, I decided I did not like it so I shot it with Hugger orange. Some slots from the parts box, wide good year tires from someplace, and firestone fronts. The backing plates were done by using two sets of front chromed backing plates from the AMT 63 Impala kit and painting them with Tamiya clear red. Kit supplied engine with intake from AMT 62 Bel Air kit. Interior is Tamiya tan.
  18. I got this because I liked the roses along the side. It sat for years until I decided to give it a coat of clear. I put some Pegasus gold low rider wheels on it. Parts box air cleaner I painted the carpet area and put in the custom wheel from the Super Shaker version of this kit. I'm going to use the custom nose and rear on this one. More later....
  19. I started this one many years ago. I got the frame fitted and the body in primer but then that was it. Since I got the new release I thought I'd get this one back out and try to finish it. I had to cut off the radiator support from the body and the mounting tab on the front grill/bumper to get the front to fit. I also needed to remove the rear mounting posts for the back bumper. I don't remember if I needed to modify the frame from the 62 Bel Air any. I was going to use the fender wells from the Bel Air but I think I'll just use the ones that came with the 63 Impala and the firewall from the 62 Bel Air to get this one done. More later.
  20. I love all aspects of car culture, but I really do admire the artistry and devotion that goes into lowriders. I can safely say my next few builds will be either bombs or lowriders. I love playing with colours and tape.! I added subwoofers and a switch box and dropped the rear end as far as it would go. I hope you like it, even if it isn't your bag

  22. I watched some Lowrider videos on YouTube and I was smitten, with the quality of the work, on these cars. I try and do something new, on each build and learn as I go. So, this is the first time I've done a paint job like this. I'm going to buy an airbrush soon, but this is all rattle can paint. The tape is Tamiya 3mm flexible tape. It's ok for gentle curves, but not for tighter radius ones. It's probably easier in the long run, to make your own line tape, with twin blades on a sheet of glass. I'll do that next time.
  23. I had started working on this one before I was sidetracked by the 60 Impala. Finally got the door panels and flooring done and now I can concentrate on getting to completed. Thanks for looking, all comments welcomed.
  24. While working on my AMT 67 SS 427, I had a thought, I wonder if the frame would fit the MPC 68 convertible? So instead of the quick build with all stock MPC parts, I went out and got another AMT 67 SS 427 kit to rob the floor, engine, frame, and fender wells from. Well, I think it will!
