custom hotrod car hauler based on a opel blitz

Recommended Posts

a while back , and in the meantime i learned more and gt more into detail ... i build a custom truck from a italeri opel blitz kit .
now i was never statisfied with it , should have been a flatbed hauler .. now a tractor .. no trailer ...
wheels too big .. (tryres)
so after a while i now decided to rebuild this one .. give it a complete overhaul .. the most important piece of this build is the cab .. the rest can be scrapped ..
the kit

what i made of it back then
11081052_612015718931342_654893247001281
wheels > i either go with smal diameter wheels and tyres and go real low or a bit more truck like and bigger ..
first made up some larger ones .. now i used 1/16 beetje rims with low profile tyres from yard sale toy car ..
the tyres actually are pretty nice and the overall wheel diameter now is good (for large wheels)
the center is temporary i would make custom hub caps if i go with these wheels
10462958_612015725598008_504301733146443
i removed the headlights .. and made up some rings and drilled and sanded to make a kind of 40's ford look

11037553_612015778931336_348463811956906
in the end i didnt liked it .. it needs to have headlights with a housing and bezel .. stick out .. and keep the more classic feel ..
so i sanded the inserted 40's ford-ish lights smooth with the fender .. leaving the hole .. and now the headlights fit partially in that hole kind of half sunken .. i could bondo the seams so its one with the fender ..
kind of cool and something i didnt see a lot

cut out the original grille , will make a custom grille and the front bumper will get a addition and become lower to the ground (same as the running boards

11082517_612015825597998_224493278256181
now i'm in doubt .. will i when its time to ... paint it gloss or weather it a bit ... ...
i kind of like the weathering idea .. more fun to do ... i always have so much fun making a weathered look ....

This is lookin pretty Blitzen cool. The visor, new headlights and lowered stance definitely give it a custom look.I would weather it myself with some vintage speed shop ghost signage on the doors. Thanks for sharing your progress with us.

thnx guys !! and yes it could fit the dio indeed :)

i was playing with exhausts .. dont think i will use them .. its a bit to bigrig-ish

10152541_612879105511670_793620613054883
used rims and rings from a bugatti (also italeri) to make deep dish rims .. i like them .. i could also do it more flat without the ring
11049514_612879112178336_846807031779797
the wheels would sit inwards a tad more .. just a loose set up
10614204_612879108845003_107572237470980
made a grille > more inside for depth and a tad larger strips then stock

The grille, the headlights.. perfect!

If you go with standing exhaust, go for big ones, those straigth pipes you see on US bigrig's.

But I wouldn't.

My idea is, diesel -> stacks

Gasser -> exhaust on the back. ;) that's how I see it, but it's your truck! And you know I like your style.

thnx guys and i wil not do standing exhausts .. i want to make something nicer , maybe side pipes that sit just under the runningboards and at the same time visiually make the side lower

today i started the front bumper ... i made a flat plate under the original bumper , almost like a skid plate ...

then kept a ridge between then .. dont want it too smooth , the rest of the cab looks vintage so it will have to fit the rest

then under the plate i made a thinner straight bumper bend in the exact shape of the original bumper ... keeping that shape flowing down .. it sits a tad deeper then the top bumper for depth and again not wanting it too massive smooth looking

material i use is old hard plastic window blinds . stuff works great , is free sooo B)

11081111_613174122148835_499549038529017

11081209_613174118815502_797669115728437
1545632_613174115482169_8358900813212900
seen from underneith .. you see the plate i mentioned kinda like a skidplate , this will act as a base chassis mounts to that and i had a smooth sturdy base for the lowest bumper
10502318_613174198815494_887823531414402
and uhhhmmmm then i used 2 old ford die-cast bumper (scale 1/18) those weird soft plastic things .. sanden them got rod of the brackets .. glued it on
looked and went  and then
it looked like a vehicle that could be in the CARS movie hahahahaha
11018335_613174202148827_212005856727203
but since i wanted a license plate .....i made a holder .. thats solved it and covered its mouth
11071469_613174205482160_363629226611499
then made the sides a bit round .. you see the die-cast bumper i used
11081260_613174275482153_545793789953824
i think ... shape wise spot on .. its like fat and low .. but still has got the vintage look that fits the rest of the cab ..
i like the center most kind of buldges out and compliments the grille

thnx wayne !!

try-ed a third set of rims / wheels ..
a while back i found a trown away small scale tractor .. the rear wheels looked great so i took them off and put them in my partsbox ..
now i thought they would look cool on the truck .. wide rim , 2-piece .. bit more industrial looking ...
so i grinded off the large edge on the center where the tyre sits on
before and after >
19095_613505558782358_871241150409248529
nice deep dish
11056434_613505548782359_410101786426129
used tyres of a 1/24 ferrari california (got those from my brother) ... they fit super snug around the rim ... now i candrill open the holes , make a centercap .. paint the rim and maybe do the bolts from the center where it bolts on the outer rim chrome

drilled some holes .. the part where the center connects to the outer ring , there i drilled holes in the larger surface .. because its weird toy plastic and the tiny pin thing wasnt real safe to drill .. beside that that size drill i need to buy again .. broke those tiny drills :(

10995599_613523682113879_225827941092640
some steel pins just to see how it looks .. i want to make bolts from styrene and in the center like those longer bolts that stick out a bit

thnx guys !!

stractor wheels wont be used sadly .. its toy plastic and although i got it fairly smooth and then painted them chrome they just ... didnt look great

also the back side is wierd , they where so wide and i shorthened the width and from the back its not possible to make a nice cover .. they already just fitted width wise..

and i also want that side to look great , the bugatti rims fit much better and those backsides are great .. fits onto the axle ...now i will use those with the tyres i had around the tractor wheels
