NOMAD WHEELSTANDER - Belated Christmas - 1/13/16

Recommended Posts

Yes Joe, it IS alive.  And you WILL bend to its wishes.  :P   Can't wait to see your next update!!   Cheers, Tim

Oh Great Machinist From Afar!!!!! I hear and obaaaaaaaayyyy........

Well, after seeing John's progress on the Stagecoach, I shamed myself into getting back to work. If anyone thinks I'm slow, it's probably because I read my first model box wrong. I took six years to complete it. I figured that was pretty good since the box said 6 to 12 years.

Like I was saying, I got some work done today. (I'm sorry. I heard that one at the NNL West and I've been saving it for a special occasion.) I finished prepping the back half. Then I made some main frame mods, removing the exhaust mounts and squaring things up in general before the conjoining.........mating.......attachment..........shoot!!!! I put the frame halves together.

To bring the evening's festivities to an end, I marked the roof line where I'll give it the old hack and slash routine. Then I took some pictures of it.

See?

Shaping up nicely. Like the way you're going to cut the roof.

Thanks Bob. It's going to be a challenge on the roof because the body is so thick, but I'm hoping that will also work in my favor.

excellent start on a project , i cant wait to see more keep up the good work.B)

Romell !!!!!!!!!! Nice of you to come up for air. :o I still have nightmares about showing up at a contest, only to see your Daytona sitting on the table. Might as well go home......... Seriously, I'd love to see it and you in person.

It MIGHT be a double update day for me. I got the rear bumper attached to the frame. It's kinda important since that's what's gonna keep the body level in the down position.

Later I hope to jump on the leafs.

Joe, it is coming along nicely.

Thanx Stephan. I appreciate you watching.

I can't believe it, but here's the second update. I got a great start on the rear leaf springs. About 4 months ago, I picked up a Fiskars Paper Cutter board. Good thing too, because I needed it tonite. The first strips of roof flashing (mentioned previously), were way too thin and the X-Acto cuts were terrible. The paper cutter made plenty of strips with clean edges and they even came out with the right arc !! A jewelers / beaders ring bending plier was used for the main spring ends, then needed to be opened up a little to accept the bolts. The set up will be a 4 leaf system front and rear. Next I'll drill the center holes and put it together with spring retainer clips. After that, I'll make a set of brackets.

A quick note on the paper cutter. On the smaller version, there is a wire to show you where the cut will be. Not so on the big'n. Instead, there is a white strip of plastic (?). Run the cutting head along the strip a few times and it will make a black line from the blade edge. That's where the cut will be. A strip of aluminum sacrificed it's oversized life to bring you this information. Use it well. Finally, it takes about 8 to 10 passes to make the cut, but you'll hear it when it happens. ***End Tutorial***

I got to do something fun also. I keep most of my small scrap plastic in mushroom jars. Mmmmmmmm, mushrooms........Huh? Oh, right, plastic. No, wait, jars. Sorry. This evening, I added my first scrap aluminum jar. It's a first step into a larger world. Yay, Me. (Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go buy 4 more Dremel tools to keep up with Tim.)

P. S. I think the small Mason jar was a love child. Don't remember buying it. Hmmmmmmmm

Thanks a lot folks. I'm happy you're happy.

It has occurred to me why modelers who use metal are, the way they are. Good thing I was already insane before I started.

I'm almost there on the springs. Today I made all of the parts except for the leaf retainer clips and I'm in the process of drilling the leafs (leaves?). I polished the brackets up a little. The leafs will go au naturale'.

The tools are simple. Cut to length. Clamping the piece in a pair of flat nose pliers, I filed the end corners slightly rounded. After I drill the holes, I remove the flash with an X-Acto. I used a bead reamer as a center punch and a hole reamer. Lastly I use a polishing nail file to clean them up. The ice cream stick is to prevent damage to my mat. It heals cuts fine, but it hates drills.

Just one pic. I'm mentally drained.

Joe, nicely done and I really want to thank you for the pic of the cutting tool and tutorial.  I'm going to get one and try it on some parts I've wanted to try fabricating. Might just work for what I have in mind. Bout time you added a metals jar, I think a year from now you'll have 3 or 4.  Keep the detailed pics and humor coming, it adds a nice touch to your builds. Lastly, please tell Santa, I only want a lathe for Christmas..........I've been good, so...............   :P   Cheers, Tim

Tim, hard to believe I taught you something. Guess that means you owe me advice now, huh? BTW, I had a talk with Santa. He's on vacay here at an undisclosed casino. He said you might want to shoot your aspirations for that lathe a little lower. I didn't ask for details.

Chris, I'm so glad you're back on the Stagecoach. I thought I would be the one playing catch up to you and John.

Michael, there's no such thing as bad ice cream. I've dedicated many hours of research on that subject. Also, there's nothing clean about that polishing process. My fingertips looked exactly like the file when I was done. Ewwwwww. I wonder if it means that the parts are now disinfectable? ("Clean work...." :P)

Joe,

All this wheel stander stuff has got my fingers itching to whack up a certain 59 Brookwood. I've got just the engine for it too! MWAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!!

(runs off to find another cat in the bag pic) :P

Looks good thus far.

Please tell me it's a 2 door :D

So, you gonna steal the engine outa the Charlie Allen build?

Love the paper cutter, perfect! It's finding a way to a solution to an end to a problem that makes scale modeling fun. It's just weird how these solutions pop up and prove to be a simple solution to a profound problem, and yet through this medium you able to share so that others can now "do the same". I love the computer revolution, answers are just a dig away. You have helped thousands with a solution to a problem that plagues many builders because they can't thing "outside the box". I love detail...and you have done your share...make it look real.

That's a whole lotta praise for a guy who got lucky that it worked, but I'll take it Memysel.

I'm so happy with it that I think I'll do a permanent mount and lay in a supply of replacement blades. It has a tough time going thru it, but it does so cleanly and accurately. You might have issues trying to go thru anything thicker than roof flashing though.

I know I said I'd get some modeling done, but I got blindsided by a Lego Imperial Star Destroyer. I went into TRU to look at the new Star Wars toys and caved in to an old one. Four years ago, I left my last job and had to sell an entire collection of car models and Sci-Fi collectibles. Cost be darned, I want my stuff back.

Here's the pics I sent to my GrandBratz.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Chris and thanks for asking. Last couple of weeks have been hectic plus a bout with "The Blues". This weekend I'm watching the son of some friends who couldn't get a sitter. He's one of those new generation kids. "Wow, cool models. Can I hook up my X Box?"

Hopefully I'll get something done when he heads home after the weekend.
