Sorry to take you to task over this but the BMW engine was derived from the Bristol Unit, not the other way about. Nice work though, an interesting project. For the more budget conscious the Ace also came with a 2.6 Six Cylinder engine from the Ford (England) Zephyr

Even that could be pepped up with a Raymond Mays manifold and carb set up.

Thanks Dann.  I'll check out those parts Shay-thanks.

When raced a radiator shroud was often installed to reduce lift caused by air entering the enormous grille opening.  There were many different designs for the shroud and the stock grille may or may not be in place.

I think I have a very old bitza of a 280 around somewhere if you want the engine.

Shay, I looked at the kit instructions on-line and it appears it might work.  I have this Fujimi kit maybe I can modify the L24 engine.

For those that may care:
AC Cars chassis number legend:

  • AE – AC engine
  • BE – Bristol engine
  • RS – Ford engine (Rudd Speed)
  • X – Export (left hand drive)
  • CS – Carroll Shelby

Therefore the car I am building BEX1110, would be Bristol powered, left hand drive, chassis number 1110.

I want to build a 2nd car and would like it to be Zephyr powered, any suggestions on what might be a could basis to create this engine?

The inline Zephyr six block shares a lot of design characteristics with the little English Ford 4. The height and width of the block is very similar (as the bore and stroke were the same as the  Consul/Zephyr 1508 4-cylinder early on), and the distributor location is similar too (though the carbs are on the opposite side of the head).

Grafting two cylinders from a four cylinder English Ford pushrod 4 to the rear of another one ought to get you well into the ballpark visually.

The stock L24 Z-car engine most likely has Hitachi knockoffs of SU carbs. Similar visually, but they have square shoulders on the vacuum chambers, as opposed to the rounded ones on the SU version.
