Pictures and info needed on 64-67 Pontiac Tempest-LeMans Safari Wagons

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I want to get back to a project series I started some time ago

I have a Great start on the 65 Tempest/Lemans Safari wagon thanks to a photo spread in a magazine.

But, I need Good side & rear shots of others.

I want to do All possible, so 64, 66 & 67 will do for now

They All used the same roof sheet metal as Chevy's 64-667 Malibu/Chevelle wagons!

From what I have found the 64 tail lights will be the same as the 65 Tempest/Lemans wagon

Those I can create out of Rev-Mono 59 Impala pieces

I am Not sure on 66 or 67 tial lights.

Also, I guess I need to see if the Polar Lights 64 GTO body is good enough for this project.

I have a Basket case Rev 66 I can use

and 2 MPC 67's to chose from, so, those are the ones I will attepmt

was the roof the same through 72??

If so, I might look at those too.

(or at least the 72 as that kit IS still available!!!

And Yes, they will Keep GTO script!!!!

Since they will all use the GTO hood's

I wonder how many Tempest Safari wagons had GTO Engines, etc!!!!!

Many Thanks.

(and YES, I did do a SEARCH.

I found only a FEW pictures that I Might be able to use)

Yea

 Like that

But............... Actual cars not scale.

Plus, not sure if it is MY connection or not

But your pic's are Pixelized badly

Are they Small and being enlarged to fit??

or Old pic's??

AND, You did the bash differently than I plan to

I guess I should have posted the pic's of my 65 In Progress

Safari-2-crop.jpg

I kept the doors and rear quarters of the GTO, and added

the roof & Tailgate of the 65 Malibu wagon

Notice the tan/brown body vs gray roof & Tailgate

The white wedge is where I corrected the rear quarters to match Wagon quartes

and line up with the read side windows

ALSO, I used the PONTIAC lettered insert from the GTO kit

rather than keep the CHEVROLET insert.

I also raised it up to more closely match the Pontiac piece

On the 64, it should line up almost even with the top of the tail lights!

NOW, BIG Question, Can I use the P-L 64?? or do I need an AMT annual body, interior, etc???????

I have a P-L body scribed for the 4 doors, but.............

Also, where do I find the hash marks  on the front fender Rocker area??

I can use either the AMT 65 Malibu roof & interior cargo section

or the Revell 66 Chevelle Wagon roof & cargo section

BUT prefer to keep the Pontiac rear quarters

Tail lights for the 66 & 67 appear CLOSE to the 66 Chevy pieces, BUT.........................

I do NOT see separation lines in them.  AND they appear All RED!

here are the back Up lights???????

I will be adding pic's I can find (and am given) to the research folder in my Photobucket)

Hope to get some Good pictures.

Preferably of Actual cars so they are more accurate

OK, made a folder and added pic's in the Research folder.

These are the types of pic's I need

BUT, I need Good REAR shots, besides straight on side shots

ALSO 66 & 67 Te,pest/LeMans Safari Wagons have Small Round back up lights in the Rear Bumper!!!!

64 AND 65 have can have small round back up lamps as well,  they were optional,  and the 66-67 tail lamps are different  from the chevelle,   if I ever get out to my garage with my camera I will take some pics for ya.  Also  68-69 Pontiac wagons are a little different than 70-72, you could get the GTO front end if you checked off the T-41 option on the order sheet in 1972  !

At least LeMans optioned Tempest wagons were also called "Safari" in 66 & 67

I have a copy of

'The Complete Catalog of American Automobiles 46-75'

and the Safari name plate is used there for those

Also, at least for a time after 57, Safari was the name for ALL Pontiac Wagons

I found out  will have to do the 66 & 67 models like shown in the built above,

just adding the GTO front clip to the AMT 65 or Revell 66 Chevelle wagon body,

as they had a Shorter wheelbase than all other Tempest/LeMans cars

66 Wagons had  203.6 inch wheelbase vs 206.4 on Hardtops & convertibles

While 67 Wagons had a 203.4 inch wheelbase

2 Tenths shorter than the previous year

Hardtops & convertibles grew by the same 2 tenth's to 206.6

And yes the MPC 67 GTO kit has a longer wheelbase than the Revell 66 Chevelle wagon kit body!!!!

With that method though the fun part will be adding the MPC 67 or Revell/Monogram 66 GTO emblems

to the builds!!

Foil casting will be the method,

But getting them in the correct location may be difficult

I would also like to add Safari Specific trim pieces to these builds

But, finding them will be the MOST Fun part!!!!!

Carman1, is your avatar thumb the wagon you have??

Nice

But, Not sure I can do that one yet

only 68/69 I have access to is the Old Monogram 1/24.

NOT sure I want to try merging scales yet

(unless you know where I can get a couple OLD MPC 1/25 bodies Cheap or Better FREE!!!!!!!)

Try down here in my area!!!!!!!!!

At least the greater Baltimore/DC area is Closer to you than to me!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am pretty sure the 64 is almost identical to the 65 in the tailgate area

so, will just duplicate what I did there for that one

Though, HOPE the Polar-Lights 64 kit will work for me

Wish they would offer the convertible again, and in all white

like the Johnny Lightning version hardtop I have

or at least in unpainted like the current hardtop re-issue

The evilbay auction of the 64 tail light shows me that it carried over to the 65

Or at least VERY close!!!!

I just need a couple Revell/Monogram 59 Impala tail light lenses to make the from

That is what I used for the 65 tail lights

And I will use the 64 Trim piece from between the tail lights one the GTO for the tail gate insert

That will give me the PONTIAC letters

Or can I use one from a 65 again??

Close enough?????

It will be a LOT of Fun trying to do the 68/69 and 70-72 versions

Those bodies are So different!!!

Plus, not sure how much it will take to adapt the 1/25 wagon roof to the 1/24 GTO bodies for 68 & 69!!

May pass on those

I'll bet they didn't. Those numbers sound more like overall lengths to me.

Unless I'm mistaken, ALL GM A-bodies 1964-67 had the same 115" wheelbase except the Buick and Olds wagons with the glass in the roofs. Those were a little longer, but I forget the exact wheelbase.

Starting in '68, all GM A-body 2-doors were 112" wheelbase, all four-doors, wagons, and El Camino were 116". If you do a '71-'72 wagon out of a GTO, you'll need to stretch the body and the wheelbase. Only commonly available kit chassis of this length I know of is AMT '68 El Camino.

But I could be wrong. If I am, I'm sure someone will correct me.

You're mixing Wheelbase with Overall Length. The Wheelbase is the same for all models '64-'67. The length difference you have noted is Overall Length bumper to bumper, which is different depending on model.

Yes, I did Mix up length & wheelbase

But, I still need GOOD  High-res pic's

Do I keep the rocker design from MPC's 67 GTO on a 67 Tempest/LeMans wagon??

Same on 66

Tail lights will be based on Chevell pieces, but back up lights are in Bumper and NOT tail light housing

like the Chevelle!!!

OK 64 & 67  are started, but fitting Rev 66 Malibu wagon roof to MPC 67 GTO is NOT

going as easily as 65 bash went nor the Polar-Lights 64/AMT 65 wagon roof bash

Revell Wagon body is wider than MPC 67 GTO!!

Now I need a Rev/Mono 66 for the fourth of this group

I SHOULD also get to finishing the 65!!!!

If I can take some pics later today, Sat, or Sun I will start an 'In-Progress' thread

Also, If anyone has Different pics send them to me!!!!!

Dan,

I plan to do a '67 Tempest Safari to bookend with my other wagon models.I like where you are going with the '65 Tempest wagon. At one of our club meeting, one of our club members brought a beautiful resin cast '65 Tempest with the correct grille. Fortunately, the Model Car garage '67 Pontiac GTO Photoetch set includes the grille and emblems that can work on a '67 Tempest wagon. When I did my '67 Chevelle Concours Estate, lining up the front clip from the '67 to the '66 body was slightly problematic, but it can be done.

OK got the body started on the 64 & 67

Making better progress on the 67, but SHOULD have

done it the same as the 65 & 64, by using only the Pillars and Not upper quarters

under the windows

Here is the 64 body;

The lump in the left rear Quarter is fixed

I had to disassemble this area, then re-assemble it at the window line first

After that set, I added the Wedge in the mid Quarter to Lift the rear corner

I did have to cut the wedge down

I would LOVE a set of the Photo-Etch details, but..........

Maybe if some one used my builds as Resin masters I could get some

For now the plan is that all of mine will wear GTO trim, Badges, &  Script

I can Easily (and FREELY) Foil Cast all those from Twins in the collection!!

I have the Last Non-Butchered 65 GTO kit in the Collection

the Elegance Series "Street Sleeper"

And I have an Original Interior tub to modify

Though I actually need a second due to the 4dr body!!!

I can also use a second pair of Polar-Lights interior panels

for the same reason

Modify the interior to 4dr spec

Lastly, I need at least 1 Revell/Monogram 59 Impala kit Tail-light

as I only have one left

and I carved the 65 Wagon tail lights out of a set

64's look Identical, so.......

Sadly

I will be better of with one of the After-market members here

Casting resin copies of my work!!

Money is Below Minimal right now!!!!!!

Done some more work on 64

Have chassis ready save for suspension

You can ALMOST see the spare tire well added from the AMT 65 Chevelle

wagon kit under  the Right Exhaust tips

I did cut those off and reposition them slightly

I am now wondering if I should try this chassis under the 65 GTO/Tempest wagon project

Where might I find a CHEAP set of AMT Annual 64 Tempest/GTO rims?????

Promo pieces can be cut down to outer rims fairly easy, so.......

the Polar-Lights rims are to large in diameter, almost matching the Monogram 1/24 kit rims

Plus, The Hardtop has Wire basket hubcaps instead of the GTO rims like the Convertible kit did!!

Why has Round2 not re-issued the convertible kit yet with already giving us a Second of the Hardtop
