The heads have a location piece to help with getting them in the correct position. Once on the block, the intake manifold fits perfectly. The 4bbl manifold is about 2/3rds drawn. my66s55 Posted May 30, 2017 Author Share Posted May 30, 2017 Update. The 4 bbl manifold file is done and I am in the process of scaling it to fit with one of Joseph's A.F.B.'s. The air cleaners for a duel quad setup are done. I have successfully made r.t.v. molds and resin cast those parts that will be supplied that way. I have a real "56 Dodge (Custom Royal conv) with the 315 poly & 4bbl Carter WCFB & a Modelhaus kit of the same needing the same, I have been trying to figure out what to do. Will you be making these to sell? I certainly would take one of any version that would be closest. I also have a couple of those "63 Dodge pick ups that could use your engines! The poly engine in your 56 Dodge is the earlier version that uses the hemi as it's basis and is not related to the A engine. I have the heads and valve covers for the hemi version, but there is no single 4bbl manifold that I know of for it. The wcfb carb would work though. I will be doing a 55 and 56 Dodge some time in the future, but they will be D-500s and have hemi engines. Yes, this A engine will be available for purchase soon. Maybe I could modify & scratch build the parts I would need to accurately replicate my D 63-3 engine. The older Hemi-Poly's, they looked like this: Thats one of the old Hemi A block that had the Poly-Heads, installed for a Plymouth, that has yet to have the Hemi-Head accessory added to it yet, as they were made to be interchangeable with the old Hemi A blocks. my66s55 Posted July 23, 2017 Author Share Posted July 23, 2017 (edited) Some new changes as I am using a single 4 bbl engine in my 59 Plymouth convertible project. The engine that comes in the 58 Plymouth is terrible beyond belief. AMT cut out details and fudged part sizes so that they could fit it into the engine bay. I'm using the 58 frame for the 59. The bell housing on the 58 is the same size as the 57 Chrysler. I knew that the 318 poly engine had it's own bell housing for the A488 trans. and had drawn up a mostly complete file. As a result, I printed out a proper bell housing, cast the 57 trans. and bell housing and cut off the trans to attach to that bell housing. Here's the result. Others have expressed an a desire to get one for themselves. There currently isn't a 2bbl option as it's not something I need. If I receive interest for some, I'll finish the intake manifold and create a Carter DDB carb for it. I have made a Face Book page with info on how to obtain the current versions. It's on the bottom of my posts below my name. If you aren't a Face Book person, text me. Thanks to Bill Geary, aka MrObsessive for his incredible build of the 58 engine. This is what I supplied him. The 3d prints on a resin cured printer need supports in order for them to come out right. They have to be removed by clipping them close to the part and then sanding. Here is an example of the engine block stl. file used to print them. The prints do not come out flat on the bottom. You can see by the amount of supports on the block that there is a bit of sanding to do after the supports are removed. I have made some changes after building the single 4bbl version and fitting it to the 58 frame that I am using on my 59 build. The fan pulley was shortened. The front of the oil pan was changed for better fit. The proper bell housing was drawn up and printed and had the trans from the 57 Chrysler A488 adapted. The carb is one of Joseph's AFB's. I really think that we will be able to buy the printers and the material needed to print, then purchase files to print specific's as needed.It is no different than what we do now. We obtain the tools, paint and glue and have them ready for the next kit purchase. In a few years we will have the PC, the printer and the material waiting for the next file to come out that we can print. Make no mistake, this is aftermarket I refer to. Let's face it, the aftermarket guys aren't getting any younger, and there'll come a time when those that we know and regard highly in the aftermarket are going to close up shop. It's already happened with Don and Carol-----although they're still working filling orders, they're not taking any new ones. I can see 3D printing in the years to come becoming a lot more user friendly, and just like with the PC industry, folks with basic skills will be able to make parts for whatever they wish. The more detail of course, the more in depth one will have to be skilled in getting the software to cooperate in getting the part correct. It was neat building the engine as it was a definite first for me, and I can honestly say when I get around to building and finishing the complete car, I can boast that it has a correct 3D printed engine! Late last December, a Chinese company introduced a resin dlp style printer that cures uv resin with uv led light shining through an altered lcd screen. Cost, $600. It was followed at the beginning of this year by a large Chinese 3d printer manufacturer. It's called the Wanhoe d7. Cost, $399. Both these printers were bought by members of the diy 3d community who tested and improved them. The problem is, they are not made for the general public. There are things that need to be done to make them work right. Then, just recently, this same style printer showed up on Kick Starter. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/249504031/sparkmaker-the-most-affordable-desktop-sla-3d-prin?ref=preview&token=6f87b384. Here's hoping others follow your lead and make more hard-to-find engines and other parts, and share them, too. One question: It's nice to see that you used Blender to create the 3D models for your project (for those who do not know the software, it is a free 3D modeling and animation tool that can be downloaded from the Internet). What software did you use to convert the files to a 3D file format?I'm just at the beginning of learning how to use Blender and some other CAD programs, and I hope to get to your level of expertise some day. My goal is to make new or existing 3D models into model cars and parts. For example, there is an excellent, highly detailed 3D model of a 1972 AMC Matador 4-door sedan. It ought to be converted into a model car kit. The AMC 401 V-8 would have to be created in the same fashion as you made your 318 A-engine, as no scale model 401 was ever made. Hopes and dreams.Anyways, excellent work on your engine model, and thanks very much for sharing all of this info with the rest of us! To import other files, right click import and select the file you want. To export, click file, export and choose the format you want and save as.Your on the right track with you goals and ahead of the curve.
