Dodge Driver
Bullitt is my favorite scene. The 7-Ups is a close second. Watching Bill Hickman manhandle that Pontiac through the streets of New York is viewing an artist at work. Watching Bill Hickman manhandle that Pontiac through the streets of New York is viewing an artist at work. An artist at work? Those are professional stunt men doing the actual driving, and do you really think that after crashing into the back of that trailer the driver would actually be able to get out of the car even with help and walk around??? NYLIBUD
Yea,the 7UPs chase is one hell of a car chase.I heard Roy Scheider did some of his own stunt driving,in that film.As well as Gene Hackman,in The French Connection. In that chase,I read somewhere, that the camera man just sat in the back seat, and just started filming,as the car drove under the L train...And thanks for reminding me,I forgot all about The Gumball Rally..Great car chase scenes, not to mention, the movie was hilarious."The first rule of Italian driving, what is behind me,is not important"?Also, the chase in Bullit, was the first time they used still cameras inside the cars.Another epic car chase..Oh and sorry, but I could never get into any of the Furious movies. Bill Hickman was a professional stunt driver who also acted. I simply enjoy watching him drive the Bullitt Charger and the Pontiac sedan in the 7-Ups. I admire his skill behind the wheel. espo
All of the older, and all great, chases have been mentioned. But what about recent ones. There are very few but the Bourne movies and James Bond/Daniel Crag come to mind. A Russian taxi and a Mercedes SUV. espo
Did anyone else recognize the driver of the black Pontiac in the 7 Ups?? That Pontiac had to be a let down after trying to outrun Bullit with a black Charger. I don't know if anyone else has run over rail road tracks intentionally or not, but it's very hard on the suspension. Makes you wonder how much they spent replacing everything under the cars in that chase.

Wikipedia says Bill Hickman also drove the Pontiac in The French Connection (which he also acted in), but I haven't researched that any further. If that's true, he's the car chase king in my book. NYLIBUD
Dodge driver, you are absolutely right,Bill Hickman was in fact one of the stunt drivers in the French Connection. And you are right,he played a role in the movie as well.He played a Federal agent named Bill Mulderig, who eventually gets shot and killed by Gene Hackman's character,Popeye Doyle.I also read that for the car chase scene,Hickman told a camera man to get in the back seat of the Pontiac, role the film, and hang on.Whats amazing is that the chase under the L train, was shot in real time,at real speed, with no permits,or stunt coordination with local police,or people driving, and walking around at the time of the chase. However he did slam into another stunt drivers car, which was left in the film...That just proves how good of a stunt driver he was.I mean his resume includes Bullit,The French Connection, and The 7 Ups,among others..Too bad he died of cancer in 1986,at such a young age.RIP Bill Hickman, the greatest stunt driver/and coordinator of all time.? Yes! I remember Mulderig now. Didn't he bust Popeye's chops throughout the film, only to be mistakenly shot by him at the end? I think it's fair to call Bill Hickman a movie icon. NYLIBUD
Dodge, you are correct. And I agree,Hickman was a movie icon. The only problem is,that he was sort of a behind the scenes guy.Even if he played a small roll.In fact I believe he didn't even get listed as a character,or even the stuntman/driver in Bullit. But then again, have you ever noticed in older movies, they never listed every person in the making of the film? Not like today, where they list everyone in the credits, from the star of the movie,to the director, all the way down to the caterers.I guess now, everyone wants to see their names up on the big screen.? I love watching that chase just for the looks on the gunman's face, it's a combination of shock, fear, and terror, like he was actually riding with Hickman the whole time and didn't expect a ride like that! I wouldn't be surprised if the more heavily abused stunt vehicles are just scraped after they are done with them, especially if there is body and frame damage too. NYLIBUD
Hey Madhorseman,I totally agree with u.To Live and Die in LA was not only a really good flick,it had one of the best car/crash/chase scenes in movie history. All to capture a big time LA counterfeiter, played by Willem DaFoe.Actually if you watch the chase scene enough times, you can see that some of the cars were on trailers, weaving in and out of traffic, while being filmed..But that's ok,it still was still a great car chase...Do yourself a favor, if you haven't seen it yet,go watch the movie..It came out in 85,so it's slightly dated. But really action packed.Three stars for me.?.I also agree with you horseman about the chase scene in the movie FX,especially when he was driving through the meat packing area.Yet another must see movie. NYLIBUD
Oh,I almost forgot the classic,"Duel".Which just happens to be Steven Spielberg's first directorial debut.A Giant Satan Gas truck chases Dennis Weaver's really cool orange Valiant//Dart..all over the south west, trying to kill him,,,in case you never saw it.Definitely watch it.Its actually humorous to see how a young Spielberg, try's so hard to make it so dramatic, and this sit at the edge of your seat, great movie. But actually it is a cool movie, but Really its just a guys movie)

I can enjoy these movies and have good memories of my parents, too. That Pete is just so menacing and sinister looking. Whoever built it for the movie did a first rate job.
